Nalu is the Hawaiian word for wave. It can also mean mindful observation. During this series, we follow our main character, Nalu, as they explore mindful and meditation practices and deepen their understanding. On day 27, we continue to explore gratitude. Thank you to Mika Mimura Erickson for licensing the music track.

Hello everyone,

Welcome back to Nalu Mind the Flow.

We are on day 27 of our 28 day journey.

I have to admit,

It's going to be tough to close out this journey together.

We've experienced a lot.

If you're joining for the first time,

We'll start with a very basic practice that we started with at the very beginning,

So not to worry.

If you're joining repeatedly or returning,

Then welcome back.

For the last couple of days,

We followed Nalu through a journey of gratitude about their experiences,

Minding the flow and minding the world around them.

And so today we'll continue with that experience.

I will try to speak less today,

Get us more into a quiet mind.

And also get us prepared for the last day of our journey,

Which will be mostly silent together.

So sit back and relax.

If you're out walking or standing,

Then make sure you have nice firm footing with your feet on the ground.

If you're in a chair,

Feel free to get into a nice comfy spot,

Whatever that might be.

Or if you're lying down,

Gently feel the earth here holding you down with its kind gravity.

And bring the attention here now into the breath.

So the breath is there,

It's been happening all day and it's going to probably keep happening all day.

So right now we're just going to key in on the breathing.

Notice the breathing come into the body and notice the breathing as it leaves the body.

It's quite simple,

But also the mind is a really expert storyteller and so it also can seem quite difficult,

But if the mind is out there talking,

Just bring the attention back to the breath as it exhales out and inhales in,

As it inhales in and exhales out.

The breath seems to be doing this almost of its own accord.

So just observe that as it happens.

And as we join Nalu for today's journey,

See if you can relax into the current moment.

Maybe your eyes are closed,

Maybe they're open,

Either is fine.

Just noticing the breathing come in and noticing the breathing go out.

And if the mind wanders,

Starts chattering,

That's fine.

The mind is designed to do that,

But just observe whatever that thought is or those emotions and then bring the attention back to the breathing as it comes in and the breathing as it goes out.

It can help to notice maybe there's some sensation here where the breath is coming into the body or sensation where the breath is coming out of the body.

Just observe and notice.

See if you can remain curious.

Probably each breath is just slightly different from the one before it,

Slightly different from the one that will come after it.

So just notice and observe.

And as we are here in the present moment,

We return to the story of Nalu.

Today Nalu goes back to the seat there along the shore where they've been sitting for the last few days.

They noticed some gratitude for the feelings of the air coming into the body and going out and noticed gratitude for the world around them.

And today their mind starts to go back toward all of those people in their lives.

All of those people in their life that has helped them be where they are today.

So even as the breath goes in and even as the breath goes out,

Nalu is observing with their mind's eye,

They're using that storytelling mind to go back and just give a little bit of thanks,

A little bit of gratitude to those people who have maybe influenced them,

Maybe cared for them,

Maybe protected them,

Maybe even those people who rejected them or turned away because all of those people,

All of those experiences have led up to this next inhale and led up to this next exhale.

And even the next breath as it comes in would not have been possible without those people who came before them,

Nor would the next exhale have been possible.

And as the breath comes into the body and the breath goes out of the body,

You may feel the urge to take a deep breath,

That's very natural.

You may let out a sigh or you may feel emotions,

These are all natural,

Just keying in on the next breath as it comes in,

The next breath as it goes out.

And if we go back to Nalu,

They're thinking about the wonder and the possibility that even this technology that we have of observing the breath and observing sensation,

Noticing the breath,

Noticing sensation is a technology and a teaching that we have benefited from,

From many,

Many,

Many,

Many,

Many,

Many teachers over many,

Many years.

And so Nalu pauses there on their seat by the shore to send some gratitude to all of those teachers who have helped them and some grateful awareness for all of the unknown ways that they may have also helped others or how Nalu may help others in the future.

And as the next breath comes in and as the next breath goes out,

Nalu comes very faintly aware of connective waveform and connective flow that appears to be there between previous experience and the current moment and future possibility.

And as Nalu comes to nearing the conclusion of their,

Of the day and nearing the conclusion of their journey,

They're taking a moment to be grateful for the current moment as they come back to the room and notice the air around them and the trees moving and the surroundings.

Taking stock of their own sensation,

Maybe taking a deep breath and coming back to the current moment.

I so appreciate you joining today for day 27 of Nalu Mind the Flow.

We will sit quietly together for an extended period as a way for each of us to have our own personal way to close out the journey together.

I'm super grateful if you've joined for one day,

Many days,

Or all 28.

This has been a fabulous time together.

So thank you and I hope you have enjoyed.
