This practice can help an overwhelmed child access a calm and safe space in his or her imagination. Anxious and/or introverted children have a tendency to feel overwhelmed or overstimulated by too much noise or activity. What often helps, is spending some time in a quiet environment with few stimuli. You may also enjoy listening to the story, "What If Worries Weren't Wild?", in which Kiki discovers helpful ways of dealing with anxiety. Music credit: Music for Manatees by Kevin MacLeod.

Do you ever feel like you just want to run away or hide for a little while?

Perhaps the noises around you are too loud or the color is too bright.

Perhaps your clothes feel a little scratchy or a smell is annoying you.

At times like these it would be wonderful to spend time in a comfortable space away from whatever is causing you trouble.

But you don't have to run away or hide to get to such a space.

Today I would like to show you how to find a safe,

Comfortable space in your imagination.

That way you will always have a happy space where you can go to just by pretending that you are there.

Let's pretend that we are being blown away to a magical place.

A place where fairies live and where animals can talk to us.

In this place you will only find soft colors and gentle sounds.

And everyone is always friendly.

Let's take three deep breaths together to take us there.

Remember to close your eyes or else the magic won't work.

Take a deep breath in.

Can you feel yourself becoming a little bit lighter?

Now blow out slowly through your mouth.

Take a deep breath in.

Now breathe slowly out through your mouth.

Let's take a last deep breath in.

We are travelling to Fairyland very quickly now.

Blow all of the air out through your mouth.

We are here.

You can breathe at your own pace now.

Imagine that you have landed on the springiest patch of grass.

You are in a forest and everywhere little drops of water sparkle in the sunlight that reaches through the tree tops high above you.

It looks as if there are tiny little rainbows and stars twinkling everywhere.

In front of you,

You see a big fern with soft curling leaves.

You walk over to it and stroke the leaves between your fingers.

The soft leaves of the fern seem so inviting.

Perhaps you could curl up under them and rest here for a while.

You crouch down and then you see that there is a hollow space underneath the leaves.

You can smell the slightly damp soil.

There is a layer of soft leaves covering the soil.

It really looks like a very comfortable place to sit.

You crawl slowly into the hollow and then you feel something soft brush against your cheek.

It is fur.

There is someone else in this hiding place with you.

Then you see that it is a little deer and she is looking at you with mellow brown eyes.

Her name is Kiki.

She looks perfectly happy to have you there with her so you snuggle up to her warm fur.

Lying next to Kiki,

You feel completely comfortable.

Not too cold,

Not too warm.

You can feel Kiki breathing slowly in and out.

Shhh,

She is almost asleep.

Let's breathe with Kiki.

Slowly in and then slowly out again.

Slowly in and then slowly out again.

And another relaxing breath in and out again.

You feel happy sharing this space with Kiki.

There are no loud noises,

Just a few leaves rustling in the breeze.

Far away you can hear birds chirping.

Everything smells clean and fresh like crushed leaves and damp soil.

Under your fingertips,

Kiki's fur is soft and comforting.

Right here in this space with Kiki,

You feel safe.

She loves it when you spend time with her.

You can keep your eyes closed and stay here for a little while longer.

When you are ready to go home,

All you have to do is take three deep breaths to come back from Fairyland.

Remember that you are welcome to visit again whenever you like.
