This is a story about appreciating our friends for their unique inner qualities. The story helps create awareness of the qualities in others that we love and admire, and how we can let someone know that they are truly seen and valued. Khwezi's birthday party provides the perfect opportunity for her to write letters of appreciation to each of her friends, and they, in turn also end up telling her what they cherish about her.

A very special birthday party It's Squeezie's birthday on Saturday.

She decides to write each of her friends a letter to invite them to her birthday party.

She gets out her prettiest notepad and her favourite pencil and thinks for a moment.

Of course I have to start with Martin.

We will be having the party under the tree where he built everyone's favourite tree house.

Dear Martin,

You are my bravest and cleverest friend.

I still can't believe that you built that fantastic tree house all by yourself.

I'm so glad you said we should have my birthday party there on Saturday.

Everyone is going to love seeing the amazing thing you made.

Please come to my birthday party on Saturday.

I know that you have known about my party for the longest time,

But I'm writing to everyone and I wanted to send you an invitation letter too.

I hope to see you there.

With lots of love from your admiring friend,

Squeezie.

Squeezie doesn't even have to think twice about her next letter.

She smiles as she starts writing to her best friend Luna.

Dear Luna,

You are my sweetest friend.

I love your gentle heart and you never seem to get gross.

I appreciate how you always make time to listen to me no matter how busy you are.

Please come to my birthday party on Saturday.

I will be decorating the table with the special party decorations you helped me make last week.

I hope to see you there.

With lots of love,

Your best friend,

Squeezie.

The next friend Squeezie writes a letter to is Yolo.

She chews at the back of her pencil while she thinks for a few moments.

Then she writes,

Dear Yolo,

You are the most cheerful friend that I've ever had.

Spending time with you makes my heart happy and you always have the best plans for fun things everyone can do together.

Please come to my birthday party on Saturday.

We will be having cake and the lemonade you love so much.

Everyone will love the clever games you always think of.

I hope to see you there.

With lots of love from your delighted friend,

Squeezie.

Writing letters is hard work,

Squeezie says softly to herself.

I don't want to leave anyone out.

Now let me see,

Who else should I invite to my party?

Of course,

She exclaims.

She takes another sheet of note paper and starts her letter.

Dear Shy Bunny,

Being your friend is the best thing in the world.

I love the funny stories you tell about your star friends and you give the softest,

Cuddliest hugs ever.

Would you please come to my birthday party on Saturday?

The party will be during the day,

But if we do carry on until the evening,

Your star friends will be very welcome.

I will have enough cake and lemonade for everyone.

I hope to see you there.

With lots of love,

Your devoted friend,

Squeezie.

Squeezie scratches in a drawer and finds stickers and some glitter.

She decorates her letters before putting each one in an envelope.

On the outside of each envelope,

She writes her friend's name and then she sticks a few gold stars on the envelope.

Oh,

I almost forgot.

She sits up straight.

I can't ask Daisy to deliver all of my letters and not invite her,

And all of the fairies too.

She takes another sheet of notepaper and begins to write.

Dear Daisy,

You are the most light-hearted friend I have.

I love the way you giggle,

Even when your magic goes a little bit wonky.

I love all of your fairy friends too.

They make everything feel more special.

Please come to my birthday party on Saturday and bring your fairy friends along too.

You don't need to do any magic.

I will have enough cake and lemonade for everyone to enjoy.

I hope to see all of you there.

With lots of love and giggles from Squeezie.

I think that's everyone now.

Squeezie sighs happily when she puts the last gold star on Daisy's letter.

She takes her pile of letters outside to the post office tree.

Just then,

Daisy flutters by to collect the post that she needs to deliver for the day.

Do you have some letters I can deliver for you?

Daisy asks,

Fluttering her golden wings.

Yes I do,

And here's one for you too.

I'm having a party on Saturday and I'd like you to be there.

Ooh,

That sounds like such fun,

Answers Daisy.

You can count me in.

Now let me be on my way to deliver the rest of these letters to everyone.

Saturday arrives and it's a beautiful day.

Squeezie spends the morning baking her birthday cake and making lemonade.

Then she hangs streamers from the trees in the garden and puts picnic blankets and pillows on the grass for her friends to sit on.

That looks perfect,

She says when everything is ready.

She is just carrying the last glasses and plates outside when her friends arrive.

Happy birthday,

Squeezie!

All of them shout together.

One by one they hug her and tell her how happy they are to be at her party.

When everyone has arrived,

Martin gets up.

Dear Squeezie,

Thank you so much for inviting us all to your birthday party.

We are so happy to be here and we've made you a special surprise as a birthday gift.

Squeezie claps her hands and gives a little squeal.

She loves presents and surprises.

Martin continues,

All of us love the beautiful letters you sent us.

We thought that it was wonderful of you to tell each of us why we are special to you.

So today we would like to tell you how special you are to us.

Luna,

You can go first.

Luna gets up with a piece of paper with the word caring written on it in beautiful looping letters.

She pins it to a string spun between two branches.

I love you because you care about everyone.

Next Shy Bunny gets a turn.

I love you because you are kind,

He says as he pins another prettily decorated word to the string.

One by one each of Squeezie's friends gets a turn to add the special word that makes them think of her.

And soon there is a long banner with beautiful words that describe Squeezie hanging between the trees.

Words such as caring,

Kind,

Considerate,

Wise,

Thoughtful and imaginative.

Squeezie's heart glows.

This is the best birthday ever,

She says to her friends with a big smile.

It is so special to know that I am valued by each of you.

I feel very loved and appreciated.

They clap their hands together and then they have cake and lemonade and play outside until it is so dark that even the stars join the party.
