This practice is aimed at helping children calm down when they feel angry or upset. We start with a breathing exercise, and then we go on an imaginary walk in nature. During our walk, we go on a short, distracting adventure to gently lead attention away from what is troubling us. We return to the place from where we started, hopefully a little calmer than when we began. Music Credit: Windswept by Kevin MacLeod

A meditation to help you calm down when you are angry or upset.

Oh no,

It seems like you are upset today.

I'm really sorry to hear that.

I have a little friend who always knows how to calm down and she has taught me a lot.

Her name is Fairy Poppy.

If you'd like,

She can help you too.

Now all you have to do to call Poppy to come and help you is to sit quietly,

Close your eyes and think of her.

Oh how silly of me,

You don't know what she looks like yet.

Okay,

Close your eyes and I will tell you all about her.

Fairy Poppy is small.

She will probably only reach up to your knee if she was standing next to you,

But usually she prefers to flutter around your face.

She has flaming red hair,

Big sea green eyes and the cutest freckles.

When she gets upset,

It looks as though her freckles are just a little bit flimsy.

Poppy is someone who has a quick temper.

That means that she gets angry or upset easily.

But she has worked very hard at finding ways to calm down again when she feels troubled.

She has some really good advice to share with us.

Can you picture Poppy in front of you yet?

She says that it helps her to breathe deeply when she is feeling upset.

She is asking you to take a few deep breaths with her.

Let's do it together.

First,

Let's take a deep breath in and out slowly.

Let's do that again.

Breathe in slowly and slowly out again.

And let's take a long,

Slow breath together for the last time.

Breathe slowly in and let's blow the air out slowly through our lips.

Shhhhhhhhhh.

Poppy says that going for a walk also helps her to feel calmer.

She would like you to come with her today.

Don't worry,

You don't have to go anywhere.

We are going on an imaginary walk.

That is almost like dreaming about going on a walk.

Now can you see Poppy fluttering in front of you?

She wants you to follow her.

She is leading you up a green grassy hill.

The sun is shining brightly and you kick off your shoes to feel the springy grass under your feet.

When you get to the top of the hill,

You look down to see a lovely little stream below you.

There are lots of trees growing along the edge of the stream.

The water is making soft bubbling sounds and birds are singing in the trees.

Poppy flies fast down the hill.

Are you ready to follow her?

Come on,

It's so much fun to run downhill.

The wind swooshes through your hair and your legs go faster and faster until it feels like you are flying just like Poppy.

At the bottom of the hill,

You tumble down next to her.

You are both a little out of breath now.

Poppy invites you to put your feet in the water next to hers and to sit quietly to catch your breath.

Look,

There are tiny fishes in the water.

They glitter between the rocks and nibble at your toes.

Feel how that tickles.

A large leaf comes floating past on the stream.

Suddenly,

You hear soft squeaky voices coming from the leaf.

When you look closer,

You can see that there are three tiny mice that are using the leaf as a little boat.

Would you like to know where they are going?

Poppy says that you should follow them to go and see.

You carefully take your feet out of the water.

No splashing or the mice's boat might topple over and then you and Poppy start following the little leaf boat down the stream.

You bend over a little bit where the branches of a tree grow low.

You notice that the mice are squeaking loudly at each other.

Why would they be so excited?

Then you see the little leaf boat is lying on top of the leaf boat.

What could it be?

Poppy says that we must hurry and not let the mice get away.

It seems that they have been up to some naughtiness.

Quick,

Quick,

Let's huff and puff so we can walk a little faster.

Huff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Faster.

Huff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff.

Phew!

There they are.

They've stopped the boat and they are busy getting out.

And what is that they have with them?

It's a small egg that doesn't belong to the mice.

Poppy says we should hurry and grab the egg from them.

It belongs to the dove who lives up the stream.

Careful now,

Don't break the little egg.

Have you got it?

Don't worry about how cross those mice sound.

They should not take things that don't belong to them.

Poppy will show you the dove's nest.

Come along,

We are going to return her egg to her.

Hold the egg gently and then let's huff and puff our way back to where we came from all along the stream.

Huff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff,

Puff.

Poppy says the dove and her nest are very close.

There she is frantically flying about.

She's looking for her egg.

Poppy asks if she can take the egg from you.

She will put it back in the dove's nest and here comes Mama Dove to say thank you to you.

She is so happy to have her egg back.

She gives you one of her feathers.

It is a magic feather and it grows and grows and grows until it is large enough for you to step onto it.

It is almost like the mice's leaf boat and here comes a soft breeze to blow you back home.

Shhhhhh.

Let's enjoy floating on this feather for a little while.

Poppy is flying with us to make sure that we are going the right way.

Poppy says thank you that you went on this adventure with her today.

If you like you can wave at her.

Wait!

Before you go,

Poppy has one last bit of advice.

She says she likes to find someone to hug after she has finished her meal.

She says she likes to find someone to hug after she has finished her meal.

She says she likes to find someone to hug after she has been upset.

It can be anyone.

Perhaps you feel good enough now to hug the person who upset you but it's okay if you don't feel like doing that.

Perhaps you would rather hug your friend or your pet or even your teddy.

Whatever you do remember you can come back to listen to Poppy's advice again whenever you need to.

When you are ready to open your eyes you will be back where you were when this adventure started.

I hope you're feeling a bit calmer and thank you for helping Poppy today.

You
