Kenai
Kenai is a town and a peninsula in Alaska. My 18th summer, I left where I'd been living in Oregon, drove to Seattle and flew to Anchorage with my friend Jeff. We knew no one in Alaska except for a man named Perry who was my mother's old friend and who had cut my hair when I was four years old. We got to Kenai on the Kenia Peninsula, spent the summer living in the woods in a tent and worked at a fish buying station. We built a 70-foot floating dock, threw salmon from the holds of boats, drove skiffs, watched the sun set and rise in twenty minutes during the Summer Solstice and felt that this was our rite of passage, from boys to men. The song is meant to capture that youthful exhuberence and innocence. The Northern Lights, the gorgeous mountains of Denali, the schools of beluga whales following the salmon, the moose and bear, the danger, excitement and friendship of two people on a adventure.
