There are moments when we meet another person and they help us create something we never imagined. This is what happened when I was introduced by a mutual friend to Dave Hoover while on tour in New Mexico. Dave, a multi-instrumentalist from the U.S. East Coast, who handmade many of his instruments, brought me into his studio. Dave and I recorded eight pieces together in just two days, improvising most of the music. There were only few takes needed for each piece. This formed the foundation for our only full-length album together. It was a remarkable collaboration. "Red Clay" felt like two friends meeting for the first time, but who had already known each other all their lives. It was based on the Southwest desert after a rainstorm when it turns to red clay; Dave made his Aztec calendars from this natural media. To me, we used musical clay to create what you hear. A creative partnership between two different yet similar musicians on two days that felt infinite.
