You have made it to the end of this day.
Whatever it held,
Whatever it asked of you,
It is over now.
And you are here,
Horizontal,
Held,
Surrendered to the dark of the night.
This is enough.
You have done enough.
Let the night receive and welcome you.
Allow your body to find its final position.
You will not need to move again.
You have moved a lot today and for now,
Embrace stillness.
Let your legs fall open naturally.
Feet apart.
Let your arms rest away from the side of the body.
Palms turn gently upward.
Open to the quiet,
Gentle night.
And take one long breath in through the nose and release it slowly through the mouth like the last light leave in the sky.
Embrace the sunset.
Allow the sun to take leave.
Trusting that it will return tomorrow.
And for now,
The gentle,
Welcoming darkness of the night is here.
Set a silent intention now.
Not a goal,
Not a wish.
Just a single word or feeling you want to carry into sleep.
Peace,
Rest,
Release,
Home.
Whatever arrives,
Hold it gently.
Plant it like a seed in the soft ground of your awareness.
And let the light of the night do the rest.
Now we will move slowly through the body.
Not to change anything,
But simply to say goodnight to each and every part that has carried you through this day.
This will be a simple scan of the body to help shift the awareness of the mind to other areas other than the mind.
The mind that holds sticky thoughts.
The mind that thinks that it's the whole body.
Forgetting that there is feet,
Hands,
Chest and heart.
Let us begin.
Bring your awareness to your right thumb.
Your index finger,
The middle,
The ring finger,
The little finger.
And can you feel the palm of your right hand,
The back of the hand,
Your right wrist,
Forearm,
Elbow,
Your upper arm,
Your right shoulder,
The right side of your chest.
Your right ribcage,
Your right hip,
Your right thigh,
Your knee,
The calf,
Your right ankle and heel,
The sole of the foot,
Your right toes,
The pinky,
The big toe and all three in between.
Rest the awareness across the right side of the body.
Now let's shift the awareness to the left thumb.
The index finger,
The middle finger,
The ring and the little finger.
The palm of your left hand,
The back of the hand,
Your left wrist,
Forearm,
Elbow,
Your upper arm,
Your left shoulder,
The left side of the chest.
Your left ribs,
Your left hip,
Your left thigh,
Your knee,
Your calf,
The ankle and the heel and all five toes of the left foot.
Can you notice the top of the foot?
The pinky toe,
The big toe,
The middle,
Second and fourth.
Now let's guide the awareness to the back of your head against the pillow,
To your right ear,
To your left ear the crown of your head,
Your forehead,
The temples,
Smooth and wide,
Your right eyebrow,
Your left eyebrow,
The space between the brows,
Let it soften.
Your right eyelid,
Your left eyelid,
Heavy now,
So heavy,
Melting away.
Your right cheek,
Your left cheek,
The tip of the nose,
Your upper lip and the space in between.
Lower lip,
Your jaw,
Let it fall and relax.
Let the teeth part naturally,
The tongue softens,
Your throat,
Your neck,
Both shoulders together,
Releasing and falling into the ground,
Into this bed.
Your chest,
Your belly,
Rising and falling,
Rising and falling,
Rising and falling.
Your lower back against the bed,
Heavy,
Sinking.
Your hips,
Your sitting bones,
Released completely.
Both legs together,
Heavy,
Warm,
Still.
Both feet,
Both hands,
Your whole body,
Heavy,
Warm,
Completely at rest.
You are lying at the edge of a river,
The bank is soft beneath you,
Grass and earth holding every curve of your body,
Each and every cell reconnects with the natural surroundings.
The water moves slowly beside you,
Catching the last light of a day you can no longer name.
You can hear it,
A quiet pool of water over stone,
A sound,
A stone that has existed long before you and will exist long after,
And the sound of water flowing over stone,
Over earth,
Is one with you.
You are part of this nature,
You are part of energies that flow,
That flow,
That change,
That transform.
Feel the earth beneath you breathing,
Slow,
Patient,
Ancient.
It has held everything that has ever lived.
And right now,
It is holding you.
You don't have to grip,
You don't have to force,
You don't have to stay awake to feel safe,
For you are held,
You have always been held.
Now,
Your perception is open to see,
To feel the support of forces of nature that is greater than you,
Than the thoughts,
Than the mind.
Notice your breath now,
Without changing it.
Is it slow,
Shallow,
Deep?
Just watch it the way you might notice and watch the clouds.
There is no need to name them,
No need to direct or control them.
Simply witnessing the miracle of a body that has breathed itself through every night you have ever known,
Have ever lived,
Have ever relaxed,
And slept through the night.
With each exhale now,
Feel yourself sinking a little deeper,
Deeper into rest,
A place between waking and sleeping,
Where the body heals,
Where the mind releases,
Where the nervous system finally,
Finally lets go.
A pair of warm golden hands rest on your shoulders,
Light shines around you,
They're not asking anything of you,
They are simply present,
Steady,
Patient,
Kind.
Feel the warmth spread from your shoulders,
Down through your chest,
Into your belly.
You are safe here,
You are known here,
You are loved.
Allow this golden light to hold you,
To guide you into deep relaxation,
And bring the awareness to the river for a moment.
The water and the surroundings are darker now,
The sky above you full of stars,
So many stars you cannot count,
You cannot name them,
And you don't need to.
You are one small warm body on the bank of an ancient river,
Under an infinite sky.
And somehow,
Impossibly,
That feels like exactly enough,
More than enough.
This is it.
Let your awareness begin to soften now,
The edges of your thoughts blurring,
The sounds around you becoming distant,
Dreamlike,
Your body heavy,
Warm,
Completely addressed.
There is nothing left to do,
No one left to be.
Just this breath,
This infinite relaxing darkness of the night,
This quiet dissolving into silence.
If sleep is knocking on your door,
Allow it to enter.
No need to hold on any words,
No need to hold on to anything,
The river is carrying you now.
Let it,
Let it take you all the way under,
Into the deep,
Healing,
Magical goodnight.
