Have you noticed when people are having arguments or disagreements or debates that so much of it is about winning?
So much of it is about trying to force your view onto the other person,
Or them trying to force their view onto you.
These arguments,
Of course,
Are highly unconstructive and rarely end up having no benefit except for exhausting the two parties by which they don't agree in the long term anyway.
So what this brings up is,
How do I then have a healthy disagreement or argument or debate?
So we can think of it in a first point as,
If you're having a disagreement,
Is it a bad faith disagreement,
Where all you're doing is trying to prove yourself correct?
We must not engage in these type of arguments or debates or disagreements,
Because in the end they're useless.
In this case,
What we actually should do is try to prove our own cherished ideas wrong on every level.
If you do this,
And they are still correct,
Then you might actually be on the right path and your ideas might be correct.
What this means is that if you do have a disagreement about an idea with somebody,
Or somebody disagrees with your viewpoint,
You can ask yourself,
Are they giving me a new point that I haven't checked?
Or,
Have I already checked this viewpoint and I have an answer to it which I know is correct in favor of my idea?
These type of arguments,
Based in this way,
And definitely based on science,
Can have great benefit and are worthwhile engaging in.
All other disagreements,
Arguments,
And debates are just simply a waste of time.
