Hello,
My dear friend.
I don't know where you're listening from today.
Maybe you're out for a walk.
Maybe you're driving.
Maybe you're sitting with a cup of tea,
Enjoying a few quiet moments before the day gets busy.
Wherever you are,
I'm glad you're here.
Because I'd like to invite you into something we don't do nearly often enough.
It's called a pause.
Late August has always felt like an interesting time of year for me.
It's not quite summer anymore,
But it isn't fall yet either.
The days are still warm,
But if you're paying attention,
You can feel a subtle shift is about to occur.
The evenings arrive a little earlier.
The light's starting to change.
There's definitely a different rhythm in the air.
For many families,
It's back to school season.
Vacations are winding down,
Calendars beginning to fill again.
And before we know it,
We'll be talking about the holidays and then another year will be coming to a close.
It's amazing how quickly that happens.
In Chinese medicine,
We're encouraged to pay attention to these transitions.
Nature doesn't rush from one season into the next.
It moves gradually.
It adjusts.
It prepares.
Maybe we can give ourselves permission to do the same.
So today,
I'd like to offer you a simple invitation.
Rather than asking,
What do I still need to accomplish this year?
What have you asked?
How has this year felt?
Just notice whatever comes up.
No need to judge it.
No need to fix it.
Just notice.
Has this year been a year of growth?
A year of healing?
A year of letting go?
A year that maybe stretched you in ways you never expected.
Or maybe it's simply been a year of putting one foot in front of the other.
And whatever your answer is,
It's enough.
Now,
If it feels comfortable,
Let's take a slow breath in.
And let it go.
As you breathe,
I'd like to offer you a few questions.
Not questions you need to answer right now,
Just questions to carry with you throughout the day.
What has brought you the most joy this year?
Who are the people that leave you feeling lighter after you've spent time with them?
Because we want to keep them close.
What has quietly been draining your energy?
Or maybe what has boldly,
Loudly been draining your energy?
What are you ready to release?
And perhaps my favorite question.
How do you want the rest of this year to feel?
Notice I didn't ask what you want to achieve,
What do you want to put on your to-do list,
What goal do you want to put in place for the rest of the year.
I asked,
How do you want to feel?
Maybe you'd like to feel calmer.
More present.
More connected.
And with who?
Healthier.
More playful?
Maybe more rested.
Sometimes those feelings become a better guide than any list of goals we could write.
One of the things I love most about Chinese medicine is that it reminds us wellness isn't something we arrive at.
It's not something that we check off the list never to revisit again.
It's something we practice again and again.
Season after season,
Year after year.
And late summer gives us this beautiful opportunity.
To make small adjustments before life speeds up again.
Not dramatic changes,
Just gentle ones.
Maybe you go to bed a little earlier.
Maybe you spend more time outside.
Maybe you finally schedule that acupuncture appointment you've been meaning to make or get that massage.
Maybe you drink your tea without multitasking.
Maybe you take a walk after dinner.
Maybe you simply give yourself permission to rest.
Maybe you try to get more naps in.
Small things.
You know,
Small things have a way of becoming big things over time.
And if this year hasn't gone the way you hoped.
Please know.
You don't have to wait until January to begin again.
There is still time.
Time to care for yourself.
Time to reconnect.
Time to heal.
Time to choose differently.
The calendar doesn't decide when a new chapter begins.
Sometimes a single quiet moment does.
So before we finish today,
I'd like to leave you with one final question.
Imagine it's the end of December.
You look back on these last few months with kindness.
What do you hope?
You'll be grateful that you chose today.
Take a breath.
Trust whatever comes.
And let that be enough.
Let that be enough.
Thank you for sharing these few moments with me.
I hope as summer gently gives way to fall,
You find a little more space to slow down,
To listen,
And to appreciate just how far you've already come.
Until next time,
Take good care of yourself.
