Your Mind On Autoplay: Decoding 6 Common Dreams
In this short talk, Brenton Harris interprets 6 common dreams we've nearly all experienced: dreams of teeth falling out, dreams of being pregnant, dreams of falling, dreams of being chased, dreams of death/dying, and nightmares. He also gives suggestions for working with and applying these dreams, and for utilizing dreams in general as a tool for greater intentionality and insight.

Hello,
Brinson here,
And I'm going to talk to you about dreams today,
And more importantly,
How our minds tend to be on autoplay and what our dreams actually have to say about it.
Because these days,
Mornings tend to disappear in a rush of routine.
There's an alarm,
And then we snooze,
And then there's Facebook,
An email before we even get out of bed,
And then when we finally rise,
It's shower,
Dress,
Instagram,
Caffeine,
Kids,
Food,
Facebook,
School,
Work.
I mean,
If you're disciplined,
You might find a workout or a meditation somewhere in that list,
But even these activities are sandwiched between obligations and responsibilities.
And before you know it,
You're hauling your tired body into bed and scrawling yourself to sleep again.
And don't worry,
This isn't a phones-are-bad talk,
None of the research about social media use is alarming.
Instead,
It's a plea to listen to a nearly forgotten technology for feedback,
For growth,
And healing,
And one that you're actually already familiar with.
What's more,
All it takes to access this good stuff is a night's rest,
Because believe it or not,
I'm talking about your dreams.
So for millennia,
People have used their dreams for incredible insight and understanding.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein,
Dimitri Mendeleev's arrangement of the periodic table of elements,
Even Harriet Tubman's navigation of the Underground Railroad are just a few examples of how dreams have played an important role in our history.
In fact,
Indigenous peoples utilized dream messages as guidance for large tribal decisions,
Similar to an inner advisory board,
If you will.
And yet today,
People largely forget and ignore their nightly dreams.
But considering how fast-moving our world has become,
It's not hard to see why.
What you might not realize is that while you suck up those Z's every night,
You actually receive dream messages from what could be metaphysically referred to as the soul or inner self.
They originate in a deeper,
Intuitive part of you,
Called subconscious mind,
That often lies just out of your conscious reach.
And as such,
Your dreams give you symbolic feedback into your waking thoughts,
Your attitudes,
Your beliefs,
Your desires.
So in other words,
Your dreams show you the stories you've been telling yourself while you're awake.
So these stories,
Identities,
They can help define your life experience,
With thoughts like I am a parent,
Or I am a teacher,
Or I like fruits,
But not bananas.
But it's easy to get lost in the stories that you tell yourself,
And before you know it,
You become kind of a character in your own story,
Rather than the author of it.
So left to our own inner analysis,
Something like I burn the pancakes spirals into I'm a bad cook,
And can even become I fail every time I try new things.
We really can't be our own worst enemies.
One of the most freeing experiences a person can have is stepping out of a story that no longer describes who they are.
Paying attention to your dreams gives you the insight and perspective to do just that.
The good news is that you're always going to be the best interpreter of your own dreams,
And you'll often have a sense of a dream's overall meaning if you chew on it for a little bit.
Until you build that rapport with your subconscious mind,
Here's some insight into some of the most common dreams that people can experience from a metaphysical point of view.
If you dream of your teeth falling out,
Regardless of your flossing habits,
Dreams of teeth aren't actually about your dental hygiene for the most part.
In the language of dreams,
A language of images,
Food represents knowledge or understanding,
Something that you receive that keeps you growing and healthy and vital.
If you dream about your teeth falling out,
It can represent the challenges you're having learning something new.
Oftentimes this dream occurs when you start something new,
Like a new job,
Starting at a new school,
Move to a new place,
And fortunately,
It's both common and normal.
So be patient with yourself and remember that it's okay if you don't get everything overnight.
As you get the hang of your new gig,
Your teeth are going to stay firmly rooted as you go to sleep.
Dreams of Being Pregnant Babies in a dream represent new ideas,
Just as it takes living beings time to gestate,
Your desires and creations also need time and nurturing attention in order to manifest.
If you dream about being pregnant,
It's probably because you've been working to create something new in yourself and your life.
How far along the pregnancy is in the dream will reveal how close you are to birthing your new idea.
This insight can allow you to discern if and when you need to take action towards your desires or if it's time to be patient and positive expectation.
Keep in mind there are rare instances when women dream of being pregnant because they intuitively know they have conceived.
While this is certainly possible,
This is on the rarer side.
Dreams of Falling Sure,
Roller coasters are a fun sojourn through dips and twists,
But waking up to that same stomach-dropping feeling gets old.
While flying in a dream represents freedom in your life and in your experiences,
Falling usually represents a perspective that your life is out of control or without direction.
Feeling like your life is in freefall can happen for many reasons,
The last couple years have offered a few,
And dreams of falling will usually follow.
So pay attention to how you're feeling about it,
And from where you're falling,
As they'll give you clues as to how to find your center again.
It does merit mentioning that sometimes dreams of falling can also represent literally falling into a deeper unconscious or subconscious state of mind.
So sometimes in the falling-asleep process,
There's a literal falling,
That's why we call it falling-asleep,
That happens as you fall into a deeper part of yourself.
And if we're not fully relaxed and ready to let go of our physical body in the day's concerns,
Sometimes that falling can be interrupted and it jolts us awake.
Dreams of Being Chased If you find yourself running from something or someone,
Often not being able to run fast enough or perhaps feeling like your feet are too heavy or you're in quicksand,
It can often mean that you're running away from something in your waking life that might be weighing you down.
If things feel heavy or burdensome,
It might be time to get clear on what it is that you desire and what your passions are,
And then start taking baby steps toward fulfilling them.
Regardless,
Running is only going to exhaust you further.
So turn around and face whatever you're running from,
Both in the dream and in waking life.
Dreams of Death and Dying Few things can be more terrifying than dying in a dream,
Only to wake up gasping for air in bed.
If you're tired of watching yourself or others bite the bullet every night,
There's good news.
Death in a dream often represents transformation and change.
If you dream of the end of the world or a lot of death,
It means you're undergoing a lot of change in your life and it probably feels overwhelming.
Pay attention to your feelings about it and whether it's happening to you or it's happening by choice,
As these will offer some insight into the way that you handle change.
And lastly,
Nightmares,
Dreams of horror.
If dreams are causing you to wake up abruptly in fear or anxiety,
It could mean that you've been ignoring something inside you.
Sometimes nightmares occur because of unresolved trauma,
While other times they happen because you are ignoring an inner sense of truth,
What you could think of as your conscience or your intuition.
But these go unheeded long enough,
Your dreams will become louder and more memorable in an attempt to make you pause and reflect.
And when you don't,
Those dreams can become nightmares.
So while there are thousands of ways to interpret dreams,
It's important to remember that merely giving your attention to your dream can be the first step in a profound journey of self-discovery.
You are more than your story,
Morning Glory.
Remember that.
But let your dreams help you along the way.
