This is the introduction to Murphy and Chicky,
Their first adventure in meeting.
The hurried closing of the front door and the last of the footsteps leaving the house left a quiet hush throughout the rooms.
Ronan,
A young boy about the age of five,
Had just left for school.
Tucked in the edge of the bed was Chicky,
The old yellow chicken.
Nearly all of his soft,
Plush coat was wore away.
He was old,
As old as Ronan's mother.
Chicky was made by stitches and love by a great,
Great grandmother Ronan never knew.
Chicky's button eyes,
Shiny and black,
Blinked slowly as dust motes danced in the morning sunbeams coming in through Ronan's bedroom window.
Suddenly a flash of gray fur tumbled from beneath the sheets.
It was Murphy,
The little striped cat,
All bouncy energy and wide green eyes.
Ooh yikes,
How'd you get stuck in there,
Murphy,
Chirped.
Ronan likes to keep all of his favorite stuffies close at night.
You must be Murphy.
Can you help me out?
Chicky asked in a scrunched voice.
I am Murphy,
She said excitedly.
Of course I can get you out of there.
What's your name?
I'm Chicky and thanks for helping me out.
Ronan talks about you,
Chicky explained.
He says you like to cuddle and fly through the house.
Murphy's whiskers twitched.
That sounds just like me.
What do you do all day,
Chicky?
Well,
I've been packed away for quite some time,
So I don't really know what to do anymore,
Chicky said.
Murphy tilted her head.
Hmm,
Well,
I can show you around.
Do you want to go outside with me?
Chicky,
Who hadn't been outside in ages,
Hesitated.
Well,
I used to go outside with Ronan's mom when she was little,
But that has been a very long time ago.
Murphy,
Always curious,
Spotted the window.
Well,
Come on,
Let's go,
She exclaimed,
Her tail twitching.
I want to see the grass.
Before Chicky could protest,
Murphy was already on the move.
She leaped onto the windowsill,
Her eyes wide with excitement.
Oh,
Come on,
Chicky,
It'll be an adventure.
Chicky,
Despite his reservations,
Felt a thrill of something new.
He carefully hopped off the bed and followed Murphy to the window.
With a little push,
Murphy managed to unlatch it.
They were free!
The backyard was a blend of dazzling green grass and serene blue sky.
Murphy dashed into the grass,
Chasing butterflies and sniffing flowers.
Chicky,
More cautiously,
Explored the patio,
Marveling at the bright sunshine.
They played hide-and-seek behind the raspberry bushes and Murphy's playful pounces contrasting with Chicky's gentle clucking.
They discovered a ladybug crawling on a leaf and watched a busy bee buzzing from flower to flower.
It was a whole new world,
Filled with sights and smells they had never imagined.
But as the sun began to climb higher,
Chicky grew worried.
Um,
Murphy,
He said,
Ronan will be getting home soon,
Right?
Shouldn't we go back in?
Murphy started to run out of energy,
But was still reluctant to go in just yet.
How about just a little longer?
He'd want us to have lots of fun,
Too,
While he's at school.
Okay,
I suppose,
Agreed Chicky.
After another five minutes of playing,
Murphy started to yawn.
Together,
The playful cat and the old chicken made their way back to the window,
And they climbed back into the playroom,
Just as the distant sound of Ronan's bike crunched on top of the stones near the driveway.
They were back in their places.
Murphy curled up in the soft blankets,
And Chicky tucked into the side of the bed just near Ronan's pillow.
Their hearts beat a little faster,
But they knew they had shared a secret adventure that would be the start of a great friendship.
From that day on,
Murphy and Chicky continued to explore the wonders of their world,
Always ready for a new adventure,
But always back in their places before Ronan came home.
