Welcome to Rhythms of Rest.
I'm your host,
Eboni D.
Howell.
And today we're going to explore returning to balance.
Many of us have become so skilled at pushing through.
We push through exhaustion,
We push through stress,
We push through overwhelm,
And through the subtle signals our bodies send when they are asking for care.
And over time,
This constant pushing can become so familiar that we forget what it feels like to move through life with ease.
Regulation offers another way.
At its core.
Regulation is the body's ability to return to a state of balance after experiencing stress,
Challenge,
Or change.
It's not the absence of difficult emotions or hard experiences.
But rather it is the capacity to remain connected to ourselves as we move through them.
When we're regulated,
We can think more clearly.
Respond thoughtfully.
Connect authentically.
And remain present to what is happening within and around us.
We feel grounded rather than scattered.
Responsive rather than reactive.
Like spaciousness.
Regulation is not something that we achieve once and for all.
It's a rhythm.
A continual process of noticing when we have drifted from ourselves and gently finding our way back.
Let's take a moment to arrive just as you are.
There's nothing you need to fix before beginning.
There's nothing you need to earn.
Simply notice that you are here.
And as you find a position that feels comfortable and supported.
Allow your shoulders to soften.
Relax your jaw.
And if it feels safe.
Gently close your eyes or lower your gaze.
Take a deep,
Gentle inhale.
And a long,
Unhurried exhale,
Allowing your breath to settle into its own rhythm.
Simply let your body remember what it already knows.
Bring your attention to the places where your body is supported.
Feel your feet resting on the ground.
Notice the chair,
Cushion,
Or floor beneath you.
And allow yourself to receive that support.
You don't have to hold yourself up all on your own.
Now gently scan your body with curiosity.
Notice any areas of tightness,
Perhaps your forehead.
Your shoulders.
Your chest.
Your belly.
Your hands.
There's no need to change anything.
Just notice.
As you inhale.
Imagine breathing in steadiness.
As you exhale.
Imagine releasing whatever your body no longer needs to carry in this moment.
Breathing in,
Repeat to yourself,
I welcome peace.
Breathing out,
I release tension.
Our nervous systems are always listening.
They notice the pace of our lives.
They notice our breath.
They notice whether we are rushing or resting.
So with each slow exhale,
You're offering your body a quiet reminder.
You don't have to stay in survival mode.
You are allowed to pause.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to come home to yourself.
Now imagine a gentle wave moving through your body.
Beginning at the top of your head.
Blowing down to your face.
Your neck.
Your shoulders your arms.
Your chest.
Your belly.
Your hips.
Your legs.
And finally,
Your feet.
And as the wave passes,
Imagine it carrying away anything that feels heavy,
Or burdensome.
Any urgency,
Any striving.
Any pressure.
Leaving behind a little more ease,
A little more space,
A little more balance.
Rest here for a few breaths.
Repeat to yourself,
My body deserves care.
My mind deserves quiet.
My spirit deserves rest.
Summer provides a beautiful reminder of this wisdom.
The natural world does not remain in a state of consistent activity.
It alternates between movement and stillness,
Sun and shade.
Growth and restoration.
Every living thing honors the need for balance.
We are no different.
Accept this invitation to slow down.
To listen deeply and support your nervous system with the same care and compassion you would offer a beloved friend.
As you move through this week.
May you discover that regulation is not about controlling yourself.
It is about creating the conditions that allow your body,
Mind,
And spirit to feel safe enough to rest,
Restore,
And flourish.
And as we end this practice together,
I invite you to place your hand over your heart.
Offer yourself this blessing.
May I be grounded in this moment.
May I trust the wisdom of my body.
May I respond with gentleness instead of urgency.
May I return to balance again and again.
Carry this sense of steadiness with you as you move through the rest of your day.
And whenever life feels overwhelming,
Remember this.
Your breath is always an invitation to return.
Your body knows the way home.
May you go in peace.
