As you prepare for this body scan.
I'm going to encourage you to sit directly on the earth or on a comfortable cushion with your legs crossed.
Your hands in the Dhyana Mudra.
The positioning will be with your right hand resting on top of your left,
Palms facing upwards.
The fingers are fully extended with the four fingers of each hand resting on one another.
While the thumbs touch each other,
Pointing upwards.
First focusing on your breath,
Allowing your breath to guide you.
Like the ocean waves gently lapping against the shore.
Gently allowing.
Each exhale.
To become longer than your inhales.
Remember,
For this practice,
You are not trying to relax.
This isn't a relaxation exercise,
Although you may become relaxed.
If you find tension or pain.
Don't rush to release it.
The goal is just to let yourself know that it's there.
Noticing is the whole practice today.
The releasing comes later.
And it comes much more easily once the noticing is honest.
Forcing expectations and pressure have led to burnout.
This practice.
Is simply becoming connected to your body again.
With one deep breath in for a four count.
And deep breath out for eight.
We're going to begin.
At the top of your head.
With each place I guide you to,
Simply ask,
What's here?
Is it tension,
Ease,
Heat,
Numbness?
Nothing at all.
Every answer is a real answer,
Including I can't feel anything.
That's not failure.
Don't force it.
So starting with your head What's here?
What do you feel?
What do you notice?
And with a deep breath in and out.
Moving down to your jaw.
We hold so much tension in our jaw.
Are you clenching?
Are your lips tight?
Are you called to maybe yawn to release something that's held there?
Noticing.
What's here?
And moving down to your neck.
We hold so much stress and tension in our neck.
What do you feel?
What's here for you?
Maybe you notice you're leaning to one side or the other.
If you turn gently your head from right to left.
Is there tension one way?
But not the other.
Do you hear a crunching in your spine?
Has your neck so conditioned to simply look forward?
That mobility's been lost.
Range of motion in your neck.
Is showing the lack of range of motion in the emotions due to being in chronic burnout.
Just notice.
There's no need to fix,
No need to judge.
Moving down to your shoulders.
Are they up by your ears,
One higher than the other?
Noticing the shoulder joint,
Any pain,
Any tension.
Are your shoulders rolled forward?
Maybe you're noticing you're starting to slump.
That the strong spine reaching towards the heavens is starting to lose that stability.
Rolling the shoulders back.
Moving the shoulder blades down your back.
How does that feel?
What's here for you.
Moving into your chest and your heart.
How does your heart feel today?
Is their tension,
Tightness.
Anxiety.
Or it feels like something is squeezing,
Preventing you from relaxing.
Remember,
There's no judgment here.
Just let yourself know that it's there.
Noticing is the whole practice today.
It's the journey.
Being present with what is without trying to force something different.
Moving down to your belly.
Is your belly soft.
Do you feel each breath in traveling right down into your sacral bowl?
As your belly gently expands.
Or are you now noticing what's here as your breath gets caught up in your chest?
Taking a deep breath in.
In and out.
What's here for you.
And moving down to your hips.
Oh,
The seed.
Of your soul.
Our hips hold so much tension,
Especially if you sit a lot.
What's here for you?
Tension ease or nothing at all.
And width of deep breath in and out.
Moving down to your legs.
What's here for you?
Is there tension,
Soreness?
Heat or nothing at all.
Maybe they feel heavy.
Or in this moment you notice that you're struggling to connect the further you get from your head Maybe you notice that as you move further and further from the mind,
The realm of thinking,
Of analyzing.
It gets more difficult to create a connection.
That's okay.
Just let yourself know.
What's there?
Even if it's nothing at all.
And with a deep breath in and out.
Moving down to your feet.
So much tension in our feet that correlates to every single place on our bodies.
Without trying to fix it.
Without taking your hands out of the Dhyana Mudra.
What's here for you?
Is there tension,
Ease?
Do you notice yourself trying to fix it by maybe massaging your feet?
If you find tension.
The time is not now to release it.
Simply to let yourself know that it's there.
Releasing comes later.
And it comes much more easily once the noticing is honest.
Releasing is easier.
When it's not from force.
When it's not from attempting to fix ourselves.
But from a place of being present with what is.
And with a deep breath in and out.
Slowly rolling your shoulders wiggling your toes.
And taking as much time as you need to come back to the room.
If you prefer to stay here for a few moments,
You are welcome,
Of course,
To stay longer.
There's no rush.
No timeline.
You have nowhere to be but this present moment.
There's nothing to fix.
There's nothing to do.
You're here with your breath.
Simply let it guide you.
When you're ready to come out of today's practice.
I encourage you to grab your journal and a pen.
And spend 10 minutes wild mind writing.
The question.
Where do you hold the most tension?
And is this a familiar visitor?
Or was it a surprise?
Focusing on your breath.
And allowing yourself to be here as long as you're called.
