The story of Atlas Long ago,

In the ancient world,

There was a mighty titan named Atlas.

Atlas was known for his great strength and courage.

He was one of the many powerful beings who helped the gods during the great battle between the titans and the Olympians.

But after the battle,

The Olympian gods won and they decided to punish the titans for fighting against them.

Atlas was given a difficult and lonely task.

Zeus,

The king of the gods,

Ordered him to carry the weight of the sky on his shoulders for all eternity.

Atlas was to stand at the edges of the world and hold up the heavens,

Keeping them from falling down to earth.

It was an enormous task,

And Atlas had to carry this heavy burden every day without rest.

At first,

Atlas was strong and determined,

But the weight was so great and the sky was so heavy that over time,

Atlas became tired.

His shoulders ached and his heart grew weary from carrying the immense load.

Though he was the strongest of all the titans,

Even he struggled with such a heavy responsibility.

One day,

A hero named Hercules came to see Atlas.

Hercules was on a quest to complete twelve difficult tasks,

And one of them was to retrieve the golden apples from the garden of Hesperides.

He needed help with a task,

And he knew Atlas could assist him.

Hercules spoke to Atlas,

I need your help,

My aidy titan,

Can you fetch the golden apples for me?

Atlas agreed,

But he was tired from carrying the sky.

I will get the apples for you,

But only if you take the weight of the sky while I'm gone,

Atlas said.

Hercules agreed to take the sky for just a short time,

So Atlas went off to get the golden apples,

But when Atlas returned,

He decided he liked the idea of being free from the weight of the sky.

You can carry the sky forever now,

Hercules,

Atlas said with a smile,

But Hercules was clever.

He had a plan,

He tricked Atlas by saying,

I will take the sky,

But only if you hold it for just a moment while I adjust my clothing.

When Atlas took the sky back on his shoulders,

Hercules quickly walked away,

Carrying the sky no longer.

Atlas was tricked,

And once again,

He was left to bear the weight of the heavens.

But the story of Atlas reminds us of his incredible strength and endurance,

Even though the burden was far too great for any one being to carry forever.
