The Golden Thread Meditation is a mindfulness-based, guided practice created by Laura Poole & Amelia Donnelly. Inspired by the children's book, The Golden Thread (written by Amelia), this meditation seeks to help children cope with overwhelm, separation or bereavement. Children are reminded that love is like a golden thread that connects them to anyone (or pet) that they miss or long for. It provides them with a framework to process their grief or separation anxiety. Illustration by Deb Hudson.

Find a quiet place to sit where you feel comfortable.

This could be on your bed or on the floor with your legs crossed or out straight.

Once you're sitting comfortably I want you to close your eyes.

Then begin to relax your shoulders,

Your face,

Your hands.

Let go of everything.

Now place both your hands gently on your belly.

And we're going to take a deep breath in through the nose.

Feel your belly rise as you fill up with air.

Then breathe out through your mouth and feel your belly soften as you let go.

Let's do this a couple more times.

Breathing in through your nose,

Feeling your belly rise and breathing out through your mouth and feeling your belly soften.

One more time.

Breathing in and breathing out.

Now gently bring your attention to your heart.

Notice how you feel.

And I want you to remind yourself that your heart is full of love.

That you are safe and everything is okay.

Take a few more slow deep breaths,

Noticing any feelings around your heart.

Allow these feelings to simply be with no need to change them or control them.

Simply be with your heart and breathe in and breathe out.

Now I want you to imagine in your mind the person that you are missing.

It could be your parent,

Your friend,

Your pet.

Imagine them here with you.

See their face,

The colour of their eyes,

Their smile and feel how they make you feel.

Now I want you to imagine a thread of golden light forming in the centre of your heart space.

This is a thread of pure golden love.

This thread cannot be lost,

It cannot be broken or cut.

This thread is always in your heart.

Now imagine this thread becoming brighter and brighter,

Filling your heart with love.

Now imagine the heart of the person you are missing and imagine the thread from your heart beginning to connect to their heart.

A thread of pure golden love connecting your heart to theirs.

Now as you put your hands on your heart,

Take three big deep breaths,

Breathing in and breathing out.

As you breathe,

Keep this golden thread of connection alive and notice how you feel.

If you feel happy,

That's okay and if you feel sad,

That's okay too.

There are no good or bad feelings here.

Everything is okay.

Now take another big deep breath and I want you to send all your love through this golden thread to the heart of the person you are missing.

See their heart receive this love and glow with golden light.

As you're sending this love,

Notice how you feel and simply be with this feeling.

Allow yourself to be relaxed here and remember that everything is okay.

Take a few more moments here,

Breathing gently and I want you to begin wiggling your toes and your fingers and then slowly open your eyes.

As you go about your day today,

I want you to remember that you are love and that love connects us all and that you are safe and supported and if during your day you are missing someone,

Simply close your eyes,

Imagine their face and send love to them through the golden thread in your heart.

Anytime you feel like it,

You can come back to this meditation.

It is always here to help you relax and remind you of the love and connection we all share through our hearts.

As a bereaved adult, this meditation was just what I needed: a simple, gentle reminder that love goes on.
