Hi,
I'm Allie,
And this is one question I get asked constantly.
What's the difference between yin,
Restorative,
And gentle yoga?
They all look kind of similar from the outside,
Lots of floor poses,
Lots of stillness,
But let's break down what the differences are.
So here's the simplified version.
Yin yoga targets your connective tissues,
The stuff around your joints,
Your fascia,
Using poses held for a few minutes at a time.
There's an actual sensation of stretch that you're gonna feel you're not totally passive when you're doing yin yoga.
Restorative yoga,
On the other hand,
Uses props to support your body completely,
So there's no stretch sensation at all.
It's all about full relaxation.
Gentle yoga sits in this in-between.
You think light movement,
Minimal intensity,
But more active than either of those styles,
Yin and restorative.
So if you want a deep stretch and a little bit of productive discomfort,
Yin is the style that you should try.
If you want to be fully supported and do basically nothing,
That's restorative and you should try some restorative classes.
I teach Yin every other Wednesday morning and it's become one of my community's favorite ways to start the day slow.
If tight hips or a busy nervous system sounds like you,
That's your sign to try a Yin class.
