Get into a comfortable position and let your eyes close if that feels okay.
We're going to take three breaths.
We're going to do these in through the nose and out through the nose or mouth.
Take a breath in,
Nothing forced,
Just a conscious breath and let it go.
Another inhale and exhale.
We're going to do one more and on this one,
See if you can hold it at the top for a couple of seconds.
Then let it out and just let your breath fall into its natural rhythm.
Inhale,
Hold it,
Hold it,
And exhale.
Good.
Bring your attention into your body.
Just feel what it's like to live inside this gifted casing you've been given.
There's a difference between thinking about your body and actually noticing what it feels like to be inside it.
Right now,
We're just going to notice.
What's the temperature like on your skin?
What do your clothes feel like?
Do you have any areas of pain or discomfort?
Your body is not just something you carry around.
It's the center for all that occurs physically,
Psychologically,
Emotionally,
And spiritually.
If that's something that resonates with you and your body is paying attention to you 24-7,
It's listening to your thoughts,
Your emotions,
Your ideas,
And reacting accordingly.
Now,
Slowly move your awareness through your body,
Almost like you're listening for something.
Your head,
Jaw,
Shoulders,
These are the places we typically hold a lot of tension,
Chest,
Arms,
Hands,
Abdomen,
Hips,
Legs,
Feet.
If anything stands out,
Pain,
Tightness,
Irritation,
Any kind of discomfort,
Just pause there.
You don't need to try to relax it.
Don't try to interpret it yet.
Just stay with it and breathe.
Now,
Staying with that particular area,
We're going to see if we can communicate with it.
Let's say you're hurting somewhere on your leg.
Instead of reducing it to physical pain in your hip,
Your thigh,
Your calf,
Your foot,
We're going to widen the frame a little bit.
Your legs are responsible for movement,
Right?
They take you where you want to go.
And if you're experiencing pain and there's no obvious reason for it,
Like you've had an accident,
It can be helpful to become curious about the origin of the pain.
So without forcing any kind of answer,
You can just ask it.
Is there something you don't want to walk into?
A situation,
A relationship?
Is there some direction that feels off or uncertain?
Am I reluctant to take the next step?
We're examining potential reasons for actual physical pain and what it might represent.
You don't need to go digging for a story.
Just sit with the questions and see what shows up,
If anything.
You can apply this theory to discomfort or pain anywhere in your body.
For example,
If your shoulders hurt,
Think about what the shoulders represent.
They're built to carry things,
Right?
So you might ask yourself,
Am I holding more than I need to?
Am I acting like everything falls on my shoulders,
Like everything depends on me?
And you might ask,
What would happen if I set something down,
Even briefly?
Again,
No need to solve anything.
This isn't about fixing.
It's about digging a bit deeper into emotional causes for physical pain.
You might even consider the phrase,
I can't shoulder this anymore.
If you're having abdominal pain,
We often say,
I can't stomach this.
There's a reason our organs,
Our limbs are used as metaphors for discomfort.
Sometimes even for serious pain.
Neck pain is a fairly common phenomenon.
And for any pain in this area,
You can become curious by asking things like,
Are there things in my life that I tend to refer to as a pain in the neck?
That phrase is so common and yet so meaningful.
If you often have a stiff neck,
Is it possible that you're lacking some flexibility in your life?
Wherever your pain is,
You can always try addressing it directly.
Out loud or to yourself.
You can ask your pain,
What do you want me to know?
How can I get you back to a state of comfort?
And then just wait and breathe.
The body doesn't typically answer in sentences.
It answers in subtle shifts.
Sometimes images,
Resistance,
Sometimes nothing.
But even nothing is still a response.
It could mean your pain is deep rooted and perhaps it's not ready to reveal itself yet.
But stay with it for a few breaths.
Always return to the breath.
It's your best friend.
This is a practice you could do for days,
For weeks,
Even longer.
Until you begin to sense some subtle answers.
Now we're going to widen our attention again.
Consider your whole body.
There's sensation everywhere,
Even in places that feel neutral.
The body is always moving,
Even when you're perfectly still.
Your heart is still pumping.
Your blood is still moving.
Your body is never static.
Now imagine going a level deeper.
This is not on a visual level.
It's more of a conceptual level.
Under the skin,
Under the muscle.
Down to a cellular level.
This is where we hold past traumas,
Emotions,
Beliefs.
Basically everything that's ever happened to you is being held in your cells.
Your thoughts,
Your stress.
It holds everything.
So this is never just about having pain in one spot.
It's part of a larger pattern that includes how you're living,
How you're making decisions,
How you hold things,
How you avoid things.
All of these processes contribute to your physical state.
Now come back to the area you started with,
That area of discomfort or pain.
See if it feels the same,
Or maybe slightly different.
Even tiny shifts count.
Again,
We're not trying to change anything.
We're trying to acknowledge.
We're going to acknowledge our pain.
Kind of like a child who's having a temper tantrum.
Sometimes all that child really wants is acknowledgement.
They want to be noticed.
So we're going to talk to our pain.
You might say,
I notice you.
I feel you.
You matter.
Recognition itself is potent.
Now we're going to take a slightly deeper breath in and let it out.
One more.
Inhale.
And exhale.
Before you open your eyes,
Notice the difference,
If there is one,
Between being in your body and being disconnected from it.
You're getting a sense of what it feels like to be in your body,
To feel it from the inside.
This is something you can return to over and over again.
Not necessarily as a ritual,
But kind of as a check-in.
Your body is always talking to you.
You just need to pay attention.
When you're ready,
Open your eyes.
And now take this awareness with you.
