Hello,
Dream travelers,
And welcome to the Story Nexus.
Tonight,
You will be traveling to the Palmer House to fall asleep in their lobby.
The Palmer House is located in Chicago,
Illinois.
The Palmer House Hotel first opened its doors in 1871.
It was built with opulence in mind.
You are standing across the street from this beautiful building that looks to be about seven stories high and made almost entirely of stone.
The year is 1925.
The Palmer House is one of the oldest hotels in Chicago.
It has all the modern amenities,
But the crown jewel of the Palmer House Hotel is its lobby.
It's truly breathtaking.
You can't wait to take your seat in the lobby,
So you cross the street and head for the front door.
It's amazing,
But there is no one else on the streets for at least three blocks.
There is the faint sound of the city hum in the background,
But other than that,
You are alone.
It is dark,
And the street lamps are shining.
You feel perfectly safe here.
You know they are expecting you.
You are very welcome at the Palmer House Hotel.
You reach the other side of the street and take one last look up to the amazing architecture before you open the front door.
When you walk in,
You are amazed at what you see.
The lobby of the Palmer House Hotel has been called its crown jewel,
And with good reason.
The lobby is striking,
With huge pillars and cathedral ceilings.
The pillars themselves are not traditionally round.
They are,
In fact,
Like rectangular slabs beveled at the edges.
At the top of them are wonderfully ornate designs that travel right up to the center of the ceiling.
There are candelabra-style lights everywhere.
Many of them sit as sconces on the pillars.
Others are on lamp-style pedestals.
The bulbs are shaped like flames,
And they give off a beautiful,
Soft,
Whitish-gold hue.
The tiles on the floor are highly polished.
They are five feet square in diameter.
They are sierra-colored.
There are seating areas with beautiful rugs in hues of red and orange.
The furniture is classic.
The chairs range in color from gray to gold to orange,
And there is a large,
Brown couch waiting for you in one corner.
It's plush and velvety,
And has large,
Comfortable-looking pillows and a big blanket waiting for you.
You've arrived in the lobby late at night.
You are expected,
And you are very welcome.
You take in the elegance of this room.
There are four urns on nine-foot pedestals lit with a real fire.
The flames are stretching just above the edge.
They are gently crackling and give off a real warmth,
As if standing under a warm umbrella.
There is a bar on one side of the lobby.
Guests can order a drink there and chat with the bartender.
The bartender is wiping down some glasses.
He sees you,
Smiles and nods,
And looks over at the couch that's been prepared just for you.
You make your way over and have a seat.
After a few minutes,
The bartender dims the lights and leaves the lobby,
Leaving you alone to get a good night's rest.
It's hard not to be mesmerized by the artistry of this room.
You fluff the pillows,
Lie back,
And put the blanket over you.
This allows you to stare at the ceiling and notice the unbelievable detail in every section of it.
On the opposite end of the lobby,
There is a beautiful stairway that leads up to the Empire Room,
One of the Palmer House's beautiful event rooms.
Above it is a large clock.
You can hear it faintly ticking.
You smell a fresh scent of foliage and notice that behind you is a huge fern in a lovely hand-painted pot.
There is another one opposite the couch.
They're green and add a very earthy quality to the room.
The fire in the urns has been turned down low,
As have all the lights.
They've all been turned down to a mere flicker.
Shadows bounce off of all the curves and shiny surfaces in this gorgeous lobby.
None of it is distracting.
In fact,
You find it very soothing.
The beautiful shining tiles have held untold scores of people throughout the decades.
Some of them well-known,
Some of them not so much.
It's a feeling of comfort to be part of all this history,
A place where hospitality is taken very seriously.
A place where making guests feel welcome is paramount.
And you are that special guest for the evening.
The light from the flames in the urns dances across that beautiful ceiling.
The flickering glow of the candelabra lights is so gentle and soothing.
It's easy just to let everything go.
The place is silent,
Except for the tiny crackle from the urns.
It helps to lull you to sleep,
Taking you deeper and deeper into restful sleep.
Good night,
Dream traveler.
