Begin by finding a comfortable position.
Allow yourself to settle.
And to the support beneath you.
And if it feels comfortable,
Gently close your eyes.
There is nowhere else you need to be right now.
Nothing you need to change.
Just allow yourself to arrive.
Begin by bringing your awareness to your mouth.
Allow the muscles around the mouth and jaw to soften.
And invite the slightest suggestion of a smile.
Not a smile you have to create or force,
Just the gentle feeling of a smile.
Resting at the mouth.
Notice if anything changes.
Perhaps a little softening or warmth.
Maybe you notice nothing at all.
Whatever is here is enough.
Now imagine breathing that smile upward,
Allowing it to come to rest in the space between the eyebrows.
But the forehead softened.
Let the muscles around the eyes soften,
And simply imagine that gentle smile resting between the brow.
Now allow this smile to widen.
Moving across the inside of the head.
Until you can imagine the smile stretching gently from one ear to the other.
A soft inner spaciousness,
Nothing to solve,
Just awareness.
And now allow that smile to slowly move downward through the throat and into the heart space.
Let it rest here.
Take a breath here.
And another.
Feeling the body from the inside out.
This is where we begin.
Not by forcing,
But by fixing.
Not by trying to make this moment different than it is.
But by becoming willing to meet what is already here.
There is a phrase we hear often in recovery.
Accepting life on life's terms.
Acceptance doesn't mean we like everything life brings us.
It doesn't mean we approve of everything that has happened.
And it certainly doesn't mean we become passive.
Acceptance simply begins with recognizing,
This is what is here.
And from acceptance.
We become available for surrender.
Step three asks us to make a decision.
To turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
We make the decision.
But then we have to live the decision.
And that requires willingness.
Willingness is the key that unlocks the door to surrender.
We don't have to know how to completely let go.
We don't have to feel ready.
We don't even have to understand what comes next.
We only need to ask,
Am I willing?
Bring to mind something in your life right now that you may be trying to manage.
And travel.
Or push toward a particular outcome.
Nothing too overwhelming.
To something you notice yourself holding tightly.
And notice what happens in the body.
Where do you feel the holding?
Where do you feel the effort?
And return for a moment to the heart space.
That quiet internal smile and ask,
Am I willing to loosen my grip?
Not to stop caring.
Or give away my responsibility.
Simply loosen the grip around how I believe it has to turn out.
Maybe you're only 5% willing.
That's enough,
Because surrender can begin there.
We sometimes think surrender means doing nothing.
But surrender is not the absence of action.
Surrender changes where our action comes from.
The problem is in our willpower.
It's how we use it.
We can use our will to push against life,
To control,
To manage.
Of force and outcome.
Or we can bring our will into alignment with something greater than ourselves.
Surrender doesn't ask us to give up our will.
It asks us to change what is guiding it.
So ask yourself,
What is directing my will right now?
Self Will asks,
How can I make this turn out the way I want?
Surrender asks,
How am I being guided to respond?
And perhaps quietly offer,
Thy will,
Not mine,
Be done.
Notice what happens when you don't have to carry the outcome.
You still participate.
You still show up and make decisions.
You still are accountable.
But you don't have to control everything that follows.
There's a paradox here.
The more willing we become to depend upon a higher power,
The less our inner peace has to depend upon circumstances.
Our peace doesn't have to depend upon another person behaving the way we want.
It doesn't have to depend upon knowing what happens next.
It doesn't have to depend upon life following our plans.
But in that way,
Dependence upon something greater than ourselves can lead us toward a deeper independence of spirit.
Bring your attention back to the situation you chose earlier,
The place in your life where you may be holding tightly to how you want things to turn out.
Without trying to solve it.
Simply hold it in your awareness and ask yourself,
Am I using my energy to control the outcome or to take the next right action?
Don't search for an answer.
Just listen.
What is mine to do?
Perhaps making an amends.
Maybe it's listening,
Waiting.
Praying.
Pausing instead of reacting.
Or perhaps today,
The next right action is accepting that you simply don't know yet.
Acceptance gives us the space to see what is here.
Surrender gives us the space to stop fighting it.
And in that space,
We become free to choose our response.
Feel the difference within your body.
Control often contracts.
Surrender creates space.
And from that space,
We act.
Step three becomes more than a decision.
It becomes a way of living.
Again and again,
We surrender what is not ours to control and take responsibility for what is ours to do.
And perhaps silently repeat,
I accept what is here.
I am willing to loosen my grip.
I release what is not mine to control.
I ask for guidance.
I take the next right action.
And I release the outcome.
Return once more to the heart space.
Perhaps you can still sense that subtle internal smile,
A softness,
An openness,
A willingness.
You don't have to solve your whole life today.
You don't have to know where the road leads.
You only need enough willingness for the step that is in front of you.
Acceptance says,
This is what is.
Willingness says,
I am open.
Surrender says,
I release my need to control what happens next.
Faith says,
I am willing to be guided.
An action says.
I will do what is mine to do.
Take a slow breath into the heart.
And a long breath out.
And carry this question with you.
Am I using my energy to control the outcome or to take the next right action?
And quietly,
Thy will,
Not mine,
Be done.
Take one more breath.
Hold at the top.
And exhale through your mouth.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
May the energy of your higher power express and create in you.
As you and through you.
With gratitude and love.
Namaste.
