Our 12 Acupuncture meridians provide answers to critical questions about natural cycles and the body/ mind link. In this guided insight meditation, we connect to our Small Intestine channel. In Chinese Medicine our Small Intestine (our Serpent Archetype) is associated with transformation, shedding our old skins, and regeneration. The Small Intestine is responsible for absorbing nutrients from food and separating the pure from the impure. This process can be likened to shedding of old, unnecessary elements and extracting what is essential for the body’s nourishment. Just as the snake consumes its prey whole and breaks down into useable nutrients, the Small Intestine at the level of body, mind and spirit breaks down particles, information and emotions and absorbs only the essentials that we need. Our healthy Small Intestine even amid an impure environment, will find a way to see and extract the essential good in everything and everyone.

In Chinese medicine classics,

Our small intestine,

Belonging to the element of fire,

Communicates our heart essence into the world and empowers our virtues of listening and intuition.

The small intestine is the brother to the heart,

Our supreme controller.

He is also the transformer of qi,

Known as the alchemist,

As he sorts and separates the pure and essential from the waste by burning away mundanity and empowering transformation in all aspects of our being.

Physically he is a continuation of the stomach,

A little over five meters long.

He inherits partly digested food and drink from the stomach and releases purer essences to the spleen and impure to the bladder and large intestine for elimination.

His job is not limited to the physical but applies to sorting pure or true from untrue at the levels of mind and spirit.

Our small intestine builds our ability to trust our own judgment.

Our small intestine,

When he is healthy,

Allows us to see the essential good in everything and everyone,

To see our good and proper spiritual path in life and to know when we are in fact on that path.

It allows us to see the good in the spiritual path of others,

To see where we are essentially alike as well as where we are different.

At an even deeper level,

Our small intestine helps us to separate that part of us that is pure and untainted,

Consciousness itself,

From the processes of the body,

Mind and emotion which are always in flux and change,

Arising and then disappearing.

Discovery of that part of us that is unchanging is discovering spirit within us and in everything around us.

The second or sacral chakra houses the small intestine.

Its colour is orange and essence and instinct is sexuality,

Creativity and compassion.

If you have an amethyst or howlite,

Which are both known to release anxiety or stress,

Bestowing stability,

Strength and peace within us,

Place this on your second chakra now.

The animal archetype associated with our small intestine meridian is the snake or serpent.

The snake is considered a representation of wisdom,

Transformation and flexibility.

The snake association is its ability to heal from within and emerge stronger than before,

Cast off an old skin and emerge anew.

He exemplifies growth,

Ultimately encouraging us to take control of our lives and embrace change for our own growth.

So let's find a quiet place,

Sit or lay down,

Uncross your legs and allow your spine to go soft.

And just begin with four deep cleansing breaths to supplement our small intestine chi.

Soften your eyes behind your eyelids or gaze,

Soften your jaw and allow your tongue to go loose in the bottom of the palate.

Lower your chin onto your chest and feel the neck elongate up into the back of the skull and then feel the weight of the neck soften.

Feel your shoulders drop,

Shoulder blades widen and the top of your spine become softer and heavier.

Put your attention on the palms of your hands,

Feel them soften and become heavier.

Put your attention on the soles of your feet,

Feel them soften and become heavier.

Visualise your serpent coiled in your lower belly,

Visualise him gently and gracefully exiting from your belly and coming to rest beside you.

Your snake is a powerful symbol of transformation and regeneration.

It has been revered worldwide as an emblem of life force.

It is our serpent who marks the beginning or end point in a journey towards growth.

Whenever we are called to navigate challenging times with newfound strength,

We can allow our serpent to be our guide on the path of personal transformation and inner healing.

The first nine points of the channel mirror the path of its big sister,

The heart channel.

Starting at the little finger,

Running up the underside of the arm,

Along the top of the shoulder blade and up the side of the neck before ending in front of the ear.

Visualise your snake,

He will encourage you to be more aware of your innermost thoughts and feelings as he slowly accompanies you along your small intestine channel.

He may coil up or rest at each point,

Allowing the sun's fire to glisten and illuminate each beautiful scale.

So beginning at the outer edge of our little finger,

Close to the corner of the nail is small intestine one,

Little marsh.

This is the metal point and an entry point that revitalises the channel.

When we are feeling cloudy,

This point brings fresh inspiration,

Like a breath of fresh air while helping to eliminate what is toxic,

Negative and unnecessary in our lives.

We can rapidly filter with discernment and with clarity what is appropriate and correct or what is actually polluted.

This is our first place towards rapid change of sensibility.

At the base of the little finger is small intestine two,

Forward valley.

This place brings the resonances of water to our small intestine.

Onward motion,

Lubricating flow through difficult passages,

Refreshing,

Cleansing and easily accommodating to our changing environments.

Too much water puts our fire out.

Too little makes for dryness and excess heat and our balance is lost.

To properly separate pure from impure,

There must be a correct balance of fluidity.

In order to confidently move forward on our unique path to health,

We need to absorb the good and learn the lessons that are present in every situation.

These must not be washed away,

Neither must we be stalled in the valley in a stagnant mire of filth,

Pessimism or any negativity.

Just below the knuckle of the little finger is small intestine three,

Back ravine.

This place brings a burst of growth,

Hope and optimism to our small intestine.

It essentially puts wood on the fire,

Allowing it to burn stronger and brighter.

Here brings a sense of rebirth,

A kickstart,

Resolving stagnancy,

Lack of self-assertion and direction if we are stuck in our own ravines.

Just as we may become stuck on our journey of life as we sort endlessly and never make a decision about which path to take.

The side of our little finger,

Just before we join the wrist,

Is small intestine four,

Wrist bone.

This is our source point.

We can view the wrist as a junction between the core self and our extension into the outside world.

The wrist is where we extend ourselves to make contact,

Just like a handshake,

Or reach out to things within our grasp.

There are those things that we need to bring to us,

The pure and the good.

There are also those things we need to push away and eliminate.

Here we nourish our small intestine so that he can actually distinguish between those two.

On the side of the wrist crease is small intestine five,

Yang valley.

This is where fire meets fire.

Pausing here is where we burn off and turn to ash any past experiences.

Our serpent can pause here and feel the heat and warmth of fire.

With the heat and strength of fire,

The separation and transformation of the negative into the good can most effectively take place.

This transformation moves anything stuck forward,

Out and through the valley.

Travelling now to the rounded end of the ulna arm bone is the small intestine six,

Nourishing the old.

This is one of the best points to nourish body,

Mind and spirit.

This point can bring forth gifts with a tremendous feeling of vitality and relief.

Here we nourish ourselves in the face of old pain,

Empowering the assimilation of life's lessons from the past traumas.

We can support and nourish an old problem,

Perhaps something that we have long been unable to sort out and resolve.

We can get set in our ways,

Dwelling on the past,

Feeling unable to cope any longer.

So here is the place we receive the nourishment and support to get out of the rut and the old and enter the joyous flow of life.

Halfway up the outer edge of the arm is support uprightness,

Small intestine seven.

We unite the function of our heart here with our small intestine to empower insight and our intuition.

We stand upright perceiving life without colouring it with our emotions or our mental chatter.

We can think of this upright branch as our arms rooted to our shoulders by which we extend our good work,

Reminded of what is upright,

Straight and true for us.

On the outer edge of our elbow is small C,

Small intestine eight.

Here the river of nourishment from small intestine one finally reaches the C.

That is what is deep within us,

Pure and unchanging,

Void of distractions and ego driven desires.

When we become attached to our grandiosity or inferiority,

This point and place,

This C brings us home and down to earth and humbly reminds us of what is true and essential,

Whom we truly are.

Small intestine nine through to fifteen curl around the back of the shoulder and up to the base of the neck.

All shoulder points support our mind,

Body and spirit at all levels.

Allow our serpent to pause and curl lovingly around these complex shoulder joints.

Shoulders can become frozen,

Hindered from grasping life.

We carry a lot of responsibilities and burdens on our shoulders.

We must be able to sort out what is essential to carry,

Stay upright and not collapse under the stress.

These important points enable us to stand upright and straight,

Taking on a worthy and appropriate load,

Unique to who we truly are and the path that we take in life.

When things seem to be out of our grasp,

These points can provide the connection,

Revitalizing clarity where there is confusion and chaos before.

The shoulder are wonderful places for those of us who don't know which way to turn.

We are literally grasping at straws,

Trying this,

Trying that,

Mind racing,

Stuck or confused,

Unable to sort out and see what is actually essential.

Here we can break through the fog and the muddle,

Allowing us to get a firm grasp on things,

To see from a good,

Wholesome and stable place.

We move from the shoulder onto the side of the neck,

Halfway up towards the head.

Small intestine 16,

Heavenly window,

Sometimes known as the window of deafness.

Where failure to sort out has led us to only see the negative in things,

Things that we have blocked out,

Here at a deep spiritual level we can release and bring clarity to see through our window,

A glimpse of the truth.

From the shoulder up the neck,

To directly below our ear on the neck still,

Is small intestine 17,

Heavenly appearance.

Where the previous point gave us a glimpse of truth,

Here we are placed in direct contact with the truth.

This place is important for our small intestine to continue to assist the heart through purification and filtration.

If we feel separated or isolated from others,

Here we can ease that sense of separation with a refreshed perspective,

An awareness of the whole connectedness of life,

That that the fire of love permeates everywhere.

We move onto the face,

Level with the outer edge of the eye,

Just under the cheekbone is small intestine 18.

We convey our hearts essence often through speech,

So if you have ever experienced pain or tension in the jaw,

Let it release just here.

Lastly we come to rest at the point on our channel,

Small intestine 19,

Listening palace,

In the dip of the ear,

Where the ear and jaw meet.

This palace is where the responsibility for separating,

Discrimination and focus can help us hear,

Distinguish individual words,

Receive their meaning and make sense of what's being said.

We can deeply listen to others,

But importantly cultivate our own intuition,

And then we receive our messages from our own heart,

In turn and then from greater spirit.

Now smile the length of your small intestine channel,

Thank your serpent,

Snake spirit and remember he reminds us to keep grounded and connected to his healing medicine and wisdom,

And have a lovely day.

Wow. Thank you so much for this absolutely beautiful meditation. I’ve recently become a qigong teacher. I came across your meditation in my searching, and I’m so grateful that I did. I have never heard such a fantastic representation of an organ/meridian. I am eager to listen to the other tracks you have offered. Many blessings.🙏🏻
