Tonglen is a more advanced meditation technique from the Buddhist tradition. Tonglen means giving and receiving in Tibetan. In this practice, we inhale suffering and breathe out compassion, starting with our own anger and then rippling it out to the world at large. Anger is one of the three poisons that cause suffering. As activists, it is easy to come from a place of anger, but when we come from a place of compassion, understanding that our anger can be an indicator of where we desire change, we are more effective in our work. We also use the Mantra of Tara, the female incarnation of the compassionate Buddha.
