Good morning,
Captain.
Welcome back to the bridge.
Before we begin today's mission,
Let's take a moment to acknowledge something important You have not checked your email yet.
And that is a beautiful thing.
For these next few minutes,
Nobody needs anything from you.
Nobody has a question.
Nobody has a request.
Nobody is replying all to a message that should have gone to only one person.
The day has not officially started.
So take a slow breath in.
Two,
Three,
Four.
And let it out.
Two,
Three,
Four.
Good.
Another breath in.
Two,
Three,
Four.
And out,
Two,
Three,
Four.
Now imagine yourself standing at the helm of your ship.
The sea is calm.
The sun is rising.
The horizon stretches out before you.
It's peaceful.
It's beautiful.
You have a lovely cup of coffee in your hand.
And somewhere beyond that horizon,
A complete circus is already warming up.
People are preparing to make questionable decisions.
Someone is about to create a problem that didn't need to exist.
Someone else is confidently wrong about something.
A meeting is being scheduled right now that could have been solved with three sentences.
But that's later.
For now,
The sea is calm.
Take another breath.
And out.
Today is not about controlling the weather.
It's not about controlling the waves.
And it's certainly not about controlling other people.
Because let's be honest.
If controlling other people were possible.
You'd have figured it out by now.
No.
Your job is simpler than that.
Your job is to hold the wheel.
That's it!
Just hold the wheel.
Breathe in,
Two,
Three,
Four.
And out,
Two,
Three,
Four.
You don't have to solve tomorrow today.
You don't have to predict every problem.
You don't have to win every argument.
You don't have to educate every fool who crosses your path.
Thank goodness,
Because there isn't enough coffee in the world for that mission.
Today,
Your task is simply to steer.
When the waters are calm,
You steer.
When things get busy,
You steer.
Here.
When someone sends an email that makes you question the future of humanity.
You steer.
When technology stops working despite billions in dollars and decades of engineering,
You steer.
When somebody explains your own job to you,
You steer.
Notice your breathing.
Steady,
Smooth,
Calm.
Notice your body.
Strong,
Capable,
Ready for the day.
Notice the space behind your thoughts.
Calm,
Easy,
Steady.
That column is your anchor.
It was here before the first meeting.
It will still be here after the last one.
Nobody can take it from you.
Not your boss.
Not your customers.
Not your co-workers.
Not even that one person.
You know exactly who I'm talking about.
Take another slow breath.
And out.
Today,
You are not responsible for carrying the entire ship.
You are not responsible for carrying the entire crew.
You are not responsible for fixing every leak.
You are responsible for showing up with your hands on the wheel.
One decision at a time.
One conversation at a time.
One task at a time.
One breath at a time.
That's enough!
More than enough.
Now imagine placing an invisible shield around yourself.
Not a shield that blocks people out.
A shield that keeps their chaos from becoming your chaos.
Their panic does not need to become your panic.
Their urgency does not need to become your urgency.
Their emotional weather does not need to become your weather.
You can care without carrying.
You can help.
Without absorbing.
You can listen without drowning.
Take another breath.
And out.
And remember this.
Most people are doing the best they can with the level of awareness they currently have.
Some people's levels of awareness are more akin to woodland creatures.
But that is just where they're at right now.
You don't need to join them there.
You can stay on the bridge.
You can stay centered.
You can stay grounded.
You can stay kind.
And if necessary.
You can stay professionally silent.
With a flat affectation on your face.
One of the most underrated superpowers in the modern workplace.
Breathe in,
Two,
Three,
Four.
And out,
Two,
Three,
Four.
The day is beginning.
The crew is stirring.
The emails are gathering.
The meetings are forming.
The chaos is stretching and putting on its shoes.
But so are you.
And unlike the chaos,
You actually know where you're going.
So straighten your posture.
Take one final breath.
And feel your feet beneath you.
Feel your hands on the wheel.
Feel the calm beneath the noise.
And remember.
.
.
You don't need to control the ocean.
You only need to steer your ship.
Now go forth,
Captain.
May your coffee be strong!
May your Wi-Fi be stable.
And may the idiots be spaced far enough apart that you only have to deal with one or two of them at a time.
