A shimmering cluster chord opens like a sky at dawn, vast and unresolved — the sound of Japan's oldest surviving court music. Gagaku is among the oldest documented orchestral music in the world, performed in the Japanese imperial court for over a thousand years. At its center is the shō, a mouth organ that sustains shimmering cluster chords, joined by reed and bamboo flutes that bend and float above it. It was never built to resolve or rush — only to hold space.
