It's late,
The body is tired,
The mind is not.
The mind is replaying,
A conversation,
A worry,
A list,
A small interaction from earlier that wouldn't matter to anyone else,
But somehow won't stop running through your head.
Something that already happened,
Or something that hasn't yet.
This practice is for that mind.
It is doing exactly what it was trained to do,
Trying to keep you safe,
By reviewing everything,
Looking for the thing it missed,
Solving for tomorrow,
Before tomorrow arrives.
You don't need to silence it,
You can't anyway.
The harder you push it to stop,
The louder it gets.
That's not a flaw in you,
That's how minds work,
When nervous systems are tired.
Try this instead.
Speak to the mind the way you'd speak to a tired employee,
Staying late at the office.
You've worked hard,
There's nothing left to solve tonight.
Whatever you're reviewing will still be available in the morning.
You can clock out,
The shift is over.
You don't have to be angry with the mind for not knowing how to stop.
You can be kind to it,
You can release it from duty,
The same way you'd thank someone who has been working too long.
The mind doesn't always obey,
That's okay.
You can let it keep running in the background,
Without giving it your full attention.
You can be tired,
And aware of the noise,
At the same time.
The noise doesn't have to stop,
For sleep to begin.
If a thought keeps coming back,
You don't have to argue with it,
You don't have to follow it,
You don't have to give it more weight than it earned.
You can simply say,
No did not tonight,
And let it pass,
Like a passing car on a street outside.
You hear it,
You don't get up to look.
The mind that won't stop replaying,
Will eventually run out of fuel.
You don't have to wait for it to stop,
You can begin to descend anyway.
The body knows how,
Let it lead.
Nothing is required from you right now,
Except permission to sleep.
With the noise still humming,
Somewhere in the background.
