Sometimes the body is resting in bed,
But the mind has already moved into tomorrow.
It begins imagining conversations that haven't happened,
Rehearsing situations we haven't experienced,
Remembering everything we need to do,
And wondering how we will handle whatever is waiting for us.
Before the new day has even begun,
We can find ourselves already living inside it.
The mind does this because it wants to prepare us.
It looks ahead,
Searches for possibilities,
And tries to make sure we are ready.
But at night,
This instinct can keep us mentally engaged when what we really need is space to rest.
We can spend hours trying to anticipate something that hasn't happened yet,
Using the present moment to solve problems that belong to the future.
We don't need to convince ourselves that tomorrow will be easy or that everything will go exactly as we hope.
We can simply recognize that tomorrow has not arrived yet.
Whatever it brings will meet us when we get there.
With a different mind.
A different moment.
And new information that we don't have tonight.
For now,
You can let tomorrow remain where it belongs.
You can trust that there will be time to think,
Decide,
Respond,
And take care of what needs your attention when the day actually arrives.
You don't have to rehearse every possibility tonight.
And now,
Let's move into a gentle meditation practice.
Take a moment to settle into the quiet of this moment.
Allow your body to be supported by the surface beneath you.
And let your breathing move naturally.
For these few minutes you can simply be here,
Feeling the gentle rhythm of your breath and the stillness around you.
As you rest here,
Notice if your mind has already begun moving toward tomorrow.
Perhaps there are things you need to do,
People you need to speak with.
Or decisions you need to make.
You don't need to push any of these thoughts away.
Simply notice that your mind has traveled ahead.
Imagine tomorrow as a path that continues beyond where you are now.
You can see it waiting for you,
With all the things you may eventually need to meet.
You don't have to walk that path tonight.
It will still be there when you wake.
For now,
Let yourself remain here.
Feel the weight of your body.
Notice the temperature of the air against your skin.
Listen to the quiet sounds around you.
Let your breath gently remind you of where you are.
If a thought about tomorrow appears,
You can let it be there without following it.
You might silently say,
Tomorrow will have its own time.
Then allow your attention to return to the simple sensations of this moment.
Perhaps there is something your mind keeps trying to prepare for.
You don't have to find an answer tonight.
You can allow the question to remain open.
There will be time to think about it when you are awake.
Let yourself imagine placing tomorrow somewhere just beyond the edge of your awareness.
Let it remain there,
Held gently in its own time,
Without asking your mind to keep watching over it.
Everything that belongs to tomorrow will unfold when that moment comes.
And you will be there to meet it.
For now there is only this breath,
This body,
This quiet moment.
Let yourself experience what it feels like to be completely here,
Without needing to arrive anywhere else.
Stay for a few breaths,
Allowing yourself to settle more deeply into the present moment.
And whenever you're ready,
Gently notice the space around you again.
Feel the surface beneath your body.
The air on your skin.
And the quiet movement of your breath.
Let your awareness return softly to the present,
Carrying with you the simple permission to be here,
Right now.
