Breathwork Before Sleep: Box Breathing
Box breathing is a four-part pattern: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, then repeat. The equal ratio is what gives it its name, since each side of the "box" takes the same length of time. It originated in military and tactical circles (Navy SEALs are often credited with popularising it) as a way to stay calm and clear-headed under pressure, but it works just as well for winding down at night. Why it helps with sleep: The even, structured rhythm gives the nervous system a steady cue to shift out of sympathetic activation (alertness, stress) and into parasympathetic mode (rest). Unlike 4-7-8, there is no dramatic extended exhale, it is more about consistency and predictability than intensity. That makes it a gentler entry point for people who find breath holds uncomfortable or who want something less intense before sleep.
