Welcome to this wind down to sleep meditation.
To begin,
Settle yourself into a comfortable position.
Allow your body to be supported by the bed beneath you.
If it feels safe allow the eyes to close or soften your gaze.
Get just a little more comfortable.
Take a slow breath in through the nose and exhale out through the mouth.
Again,
Breathing in and a longer breath out.
Now bring your awareness to the points of contact on the bed,
The weight of your body,
The steadiness beneath you and how you have nothing to hold up right now.
The bed is doing all the work for you and as you breathe let gravity take over and allow the day begin to loosen its grip.
Now we'll ground.
Imagine roots extending from the soles of your feet and from the base of your spine,
Travelling down into the earth and with every exhale release anything you don't need to carry into sleep.
Any noise,
Any tension,
Any leftover emotion.
Just let it drain down gently into the ground.
Now imagine a soft light around you,
Close to the skin.
It's a quiet,
Safe boundary and only what is for your highest good is welcome here.
Everything can now wait until tomorrow.
Now bring your attention to your face,
Let the forehead smooth,
Unclench the jaw,
Let the tongue rest in the mouth,
Soften the muscles around your eyes and let them sink back as if they're resting in warm water.
Now the neck and shoulders,
If there's any tightness you don't have to force it away,
Just breathe into it and on the exhale let the tightness soften by one small degree.
Feel the chest rise and fall,
Notice the breath moving you without effort.
Bring awareness to the belly,
Let it be soft,
Let it be natural.
No holding in,
No bracing.
Now the hips and pelvis,
Let them be heavy and supported,
It's safe to rest.
Move down now through the thighs,
The knees,
The calves,
All the way to the ankles and feet,
Let the feet relax and the toes loosen as if your whole lower body is melting into the bed.
Now we'll use the exhale to release the day,
So breathing in gently and breathing out letting go,
Breathing in and breathing out releasing.
When thoughts arrive that's ok,
You don't need to follow them,
Just notice that you're thinking and gently return to the feeling of the breath.
Imagine that each exhale is like setting something down,
A conversation,
A worry,
A task,
A moment from your day that has lingered.
You can pick these up tomorrow if you need,
But not tonight.
Breathing in and out and setting it all down,
Feel your body become a little heavier with each breath,
Closer to sleep and now there's nothing else you need to do,
Nowhere else you need to go,
Just follow the breath,
Let the body soften,
Know that you are safe to rest.
I'm going to step back now and leave you with a few minutes of silence,
If your mind wanders just return to the breath and the feeling of being supported.
