Chapter three,

Intuition as your compass.

Intuition is our compass.

A best friend,

Lynn A.

Robinson.

Throughout the last 10 years,

I have gone to countless networking events.

Networking and word of mouth marketing has helped my company grow a lot faster than if I didn't attend these events.

I would enter a lounge with about 50 to 100 business professionals present and just ask myself to be guided to who I needed to speak with.

It's a principle that has worked for me.

Sometimes the choices of these networking events are endless,

Even if they are now online.

And I always let my intuition guide me on which ones to go to.

One of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou goes,

People don't remember what you say,

They remember how you made them feel.

I would remind myself of this quote when I spoke French.

French is my second language.

And I would be petrified to speak the language in front of a group of executives,

Microphone in hand,

And give a one minute pitch about my company.

Over the years,

I have realized that people will forget most of what I say right after I say it.

So my energy and enthusiasm for my company is what truly matters.

This also helped relieve the pressure I would put on myself and focus more on my inner state before such events.

There are so many events to talk about,

But I wanna share just a few stories of how intuition has led me to some incredible experiences and connections I could have missed.

One of my favorite stories is about an English speaking morning networking event I attended.

There were maybe 20 people in all,

Learning how to improve our sales pitches.

We had to stand up and do a quick introduction about ourselves.

And that is when I first saw Melinda.

She had all the same interests as I did about personal development,

Public speaking,

And facilitating workshops.

I knew I had to know her.

So what did I do?

At the end of the event before leaving,

I walked up to her and asked her if she would like to be my friend.

Yup,

That is how I have most of my friends today.

I choose them very wisely.

She suggested we go out to a coffee.

And when we did,

I learned about some of her projects and she invited me to her home for community potluck.

When I drove up to her home,

Overlooking a beautiful lake,

I was in love.

She toured me around her huge home,

Introduced me to her husband of 10 years,

And showed me one of his paintings that I vowed to myself I would be able to afford one day.

Later,

We started a mastermind group with three other entrepreneurial women.

And one night,

We showed each other our vision boards.

Mine had pictures of Melinda's house on it and the view of the lake from her front yard.

She laughed and said,

"'Maybe one day that wish will come true.

'" Only six months later,

I finally had enough courage to leave my toxic relationship.

And I instantly thought of Melinda and knew they had an entire basement they didn't use.

I asked if I could stay there for only one month to get my bearings and find a place to live.

Many people had previously asked to live with them and they usually declined.

But at that time,

I asked,

They felt it was a good idea.

I felt so safe there,

Cared for and nourished.

A week later,

Melinda told me that she was getting a divorce and was getting a realtor to put their house on the market.

So I better start looking for another place quickly.

Just days earlier,

My mom asked me what my plans were since she thought it was only in Quebec for that former relationship.

I had already started my company and loved the work I did.

I had amazing friends,

Confidence in my French and weekly activities I wouldn't find in my home province of Saskatchewan.

My mom told me that they were looking for investments and knew how undervalued the Quebec market was.

She asked if I knew of any nice homes to invest in.

I jumped at that question as fast as I could,

Saying that I was living in my dream home and within a week,

A real estate broker would be charging for his commission fees.

My mom and Melinda spoke and made an agreement that my parents would fly to visit the home.

By the end of the weekend,

An offer was made and I was now the proud new owner of my dream home.

Melinda,

Her soon to be ex-husband and I continued living together for a few months as everyone transitioned.

In that time,

I was able to watch a couple in the middle of a divorce,

Treat each other with more love and respect than I had ever seen in any of my relationships.

There was a lot of healing that took place for me during those months.

One day,

I went to a networking lunch event and met a nice bubbly woman.

She was also an artist and I wanted Melinda's husband to have more artistic friends.

I told her about him and she couldn't find his website.

Throughout the weeks,

I had already nagged him to get some business cards made up so I could hand them out to my contacts.

He finally did and they arrived right before another lunch event I was drawn to attend a month later.

That woman was there again.

She told me she only sporadically attended those events and I was able to give her his business card.

That day also happened to be his birthday.

She messaged him the same day complimenting his work.

Today,

They're engaged with their first child.

And P.

S.

,

When he moved out,

I bought his painting that I had always wanted and now it hangs beautifully in my living room.

I don't even want to imagine what my life would look like today if I never followed my intuition about going to that networking event that day.

Networking events are difficult for the introvert in me but I always follow gentle nudges for my intuition.

What if I never met Melinda,

Asked to become her friend or buy her house,

Which ended up being my dream home?

I do not only use my intuition in networking events to guide me to who I need to speak to,

I also use it to choose which networking events to attend.

I normally taught on Wednesday nights but one night,

The class was unexpectedly canceled.

This never happened with that particular client.

So I now had a free night and there were three networking events I could have chosen from.

I asked myself which event would be the best for me and with a feeling of excitement,

Was guided to a young entrepreneurs event with the local chamber of commerce.

It was a new lounge full of lively conversations and music.

When I walked in,

I saw one of my favorite entrepreneurs from when I first started my career.

We met at the same networking events and I admired her success.

She was the person I called when I got into a car accident.

After a long eight hour wait in the emergency room after arriving by ambulance,

I had called her chiropractic office to have a full body X-ray.

She was completely booked that night but decided to fit me in between clients.

That night in particular,

I realized how important it is to have contacts even if it wasn't for business.

Anyway,

My eyes lit up when I saw her and I was convinced this was the reason my intuition led me to that event that night.

While I was enthusiastically visiting with my long lost contact,

I heard the director of the chamber of commerce making a welcome speech.

It was in French but I felt like I heard the word Japan.

Japan I thought,

How bizarre.

Why on earth would she be talking about Japan at an event in Quebec?

One of my dreams was to visit Japan.

So hearing her say that word intrigued me.

I told myself I would go and speak to the director later in the evening to ask why she had said that.

The networking event passed quickly and I completely forgot to find her to ask.

The next day I told myself I would email her but again forgot.

The next couple of weeks passed as I got distracted with emails and everyday work.

Then a little voice gently told me to contact her again.

Finally I did and she immediately replied telling me about a G20 event for young entrepreneurs and sent me the link.

She told me to let them know if I was chosen and I silently laughed to myself.

How would I be one of the 40 entrepreneurs chosen to represent Canada at the G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance event in Fukuoka,

Japan?

I was just a small entrepreneur among the many impressive entrepreneurs throughout Canada but I applied anyway.

Two months later,

I received an email that my application was now on the waiting list and if Canada opens any more seats,

I would be accepted.

This gave me the confidence to book that week off and I continued my calendar knowing I would somehow be chosen.

Only a few weeks later,

I received confirmation that I was officially chosen and had a mandatory training session the next Monday morning.

I was shocked.

Usually I am never early to things.

I would say I normally arrive exactly on time or two to three minutes after but not that morning.

I left my house,

I left my home and drove an hour to Montreal.

Parked and was waiting in the waiting room at the top of one of Montreal's most prestigious buildings 30 minutes before the meeting was to begin.

I walked in nervously,

Still in shock that I was chosen.

Finally at break,

I couldn't resist.

I went to the committee to confirm that my name really was selected.

I wanted to actually see my name on the list because I was convinced they had made a mistake with their email confirmation.

One of the committee members asked my name and then with her eyes opening wider said,

Oh yes,

We loved your video and application.

You definitely deserve to be here.

We love your enthusiasm and want you to do an Instagram story while you are in Japan as well.

I was surrounded by all of these impressive,

Highly successful entrepreneurs and I considered myself a small entrepreneur,

Not in their league.

I guess if they saw something in me and my company,

Then I had to believe it too.

That entire day felt so surreal for me.

I couldn't believe I was networking with the caliber of people I was.

I was so thankful that I had gone to that networking event only a few months earlier.

The stars had aligned for this precise moment.

The G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance is a collective of organizations across the G20 countries that work to promote and advance entrepreneurship.

Alliance members represent more than 500,

000 young entrepreneurs.

Each year,

The G20 YEA brings together hundreds of the world's top young entrepreneurs and knowledge partners at an annual summit to develop connections,

Share ideas,

And influence G20 policy.

The Alliance was founded as a movement to engage the G20 leaders in the cause of youth entrepreneurship,

Share information across borders,

Affect positive policy change,

And create a global network of young entrepreneur advocates while building a collaborative entrepreneurial environment worldwide.

I flew to Tokyo in 2019,

A 13-hour flight,

And took a train all the way south to Fukuoka,

Stopping to see Mount Fuji,

The highest mountain in Japan.

Mount Fuji literally took my breath away,

Even when it was covered a lot by the clouds.

I also stopped in Kyoto to visit the Fushimi Inari,

Also now known worldwide as one of the most iconic sites in Kyoto and in Japan as a whole.

I also visited a UNESCO World Heritage Temple and the Bamboo Forest.

My adventures were accomplished,

And days later,

I arrived in Fukuoka,

Ready to see the Canadian delegation.

For four days,

We attended conferences from speakers around the world,

Attended fancy networking events with the other delegations that Japanese business owners flew in to attend.

I even had business meetings directly there.

We all joined a community WhatsApp group to stay in touch,

And we still do to this day.

I went on tours to Saki Manufacturing Plants and the Lexus Manufacturing Plant to see the way Japanese countries perceive work and the value they instill in their employees.

On the bus,

I learned how other entrepreneurs have grown their companies and met people from around the world.

It was truly an enriching experience,

And I consider some to be my dear friends and cherish those relationships today.

In 2020,

I was again chosen to represent Canada for the Digital Summit hosted by Saudi Arabia.

In the year prior,

I would have a few dreams at night about going to Saudi Arabia and the exotic culture and adventure that would entail.

Even though it was moved to an online platform,

It was just as exciting for me.

Afterwards,

I set up a meeting with a business owner of several language schools in Saudi Arabia,

And I hope to collaborate with him one day in the future.

Again,

I don't want to imagine what my life would be like today if I didn't follow that soft,

Gentle voice nudging me to attend that faithful networking event that opened me up to so many more opportunities and connections.

I vividly remember that night.

I was tired after working every night and would rather have stayed home to watch a movie.

But over the years,

I've discovered that when I follow my intuition,

Amazing things happen.

Do you follow your intuition when making business decisions?

Yes I followed my intuition for business decision and also for relationships and people I would like to know better. I try as much as I can to speak at least a little bit with everyone to open the possibilities that a conversation can bring…
