Hi there,
I'm Katie and welcome to another video.
In another video I talked about how us therapists,
A lot of us have a lot of little fun tools and things to play with.
Last video we talked about the Vortex and I had my little spinner.
Well,
In this one,
I've got this thing here.
I don't know,
I can't remember what it's called,
A Hexermensphere or something like that,
But it's really fun to play with in so many different ways.
And I use it in therapy quite often to demonstrate some concepts,
But the concept I wanted to talk about today is what is real nervous system regulation?
We hear this term all over the place,
Reset your nervous system,
Regulate your nervous system.
And yeah,
That's great.
But what does it actually really mean to have a regulated nervous system?
So for purposes of that.
I'd like for you to imagine that as I kind of open and close this.
That a regulated nervous system is kind of somewhere in the middle.
It can go up in a little bit of activation and it can go down in activation.
And sometimes we go really,
Really high and we're super activated and it's all of this energy,
This activation energy.
And sometimes we just pain collapse into a little ball and there's a lack of energy or collapse or exhaustion,
Whatever it might be.
These both show up in many different ways.
But real regulation involves flexibility,
Having flexibility in your nervous system to where you can go out a little bit,
You can come back in,
You can experience a little bit of healthy activation,
Which is good.
We need a little activation to get up and go to work and to do all the things.
And we also need a little bit of deactivation so we can slow down,
So we can downshift,
So we can rest.
It's just this flexibility.
We're not getting stuck in this,
In all of this.
We're not getting stuck in shutdown mode.
We're just kind of working with it very gently.
Nervous system energy comes up and it goes down.
Comes up and it comes down.
That's the nature of it.
So a flexible nervous system is a regulated nervous system.
So this takes some time,
You know,
We can't just reset a button as I often remind folks.
It takes time.
It takes,
You know,
Working with the counter vortex,
Which I talked about in another video.
It takes resourcing positive.
Sensations that we can start to have access to.
And it takes being able to work with these things on a repeated basis,
Because our nervous systems,
They learn by patterning and consistency and repetition.
And that's where it starts to seep in and it starts to reorganize things so that your nervous system kind of starts to say,
Oh,
OK,
Yeah,
I can go this way now.
I can start to repattern and rebuild in a different way.
And it takes time.
It takes time.
It's a beautiful process.
It's a process of self-love and self-care and understanding and most of all,
As I always like to say,
Curiosity.
So as you are on your own nervous system healing journey,
Just keep this in mind.
And just remember that flexibility,
Flexibility.
We don't want to stay stuck.
We don't want to stay shut down.
We just want to find that magic spot of flexibility.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate having you here.
