Welcome,
Wise friends,
To this body scan meditation practice.
With Dr.
Will Oliver.
This practice is an opportunity to bring kindness and compassion to your body,
Exactly as it shows up for you today.
I invite you to choose a position that will support you best right now.
You might lie down with a padded surface supporting your knees or under your head.
Sit upright in a chair.
Or stand if that helps your wakefulness.
Whatever position you choose,
Choose it with intention.
Arms resting alongside the body or on your belly.
Palms open if that feels comfortable.
Strong emotions or sensations may arise during this practice.
You remain in charge at all times.
You can open your eyes,
Shift position,
Return your attention to the breath or other anchor,
Skip any region of the body that I might mention,
Or end the practice altogether at any time.
Choosing from moment to moment to do what feels most like care to you is an essential part of this practice.
Now,
Become aware of the breath.
Moving in and out of the body just as it is.
Without having to do anything or force anything.
Chest rising and falling.
The belly expanding and contracting.
Each breath reminding us that we belong here in this moment.
Resting with whatever is present.
Noticing without adding judgment.
Eyes softly open.
Or you may find that they incline toward closing as your body wholly welcomes the nurturing,
Protective force of radiant darkness.
Do whichever supports your presence.
As you rest in the field of awareness and warmth.
Let your body notice the surface that you're resting on without reaching for it.
Sensing where the body meets it.
And even through just this simple awareness.
An emotional or sensational response may arise.
Whatever's present,
Just greet it with care and kindness.
And let go.
Gathering your attention now.
And guiding it down both legs all the way to both feet.
The feet that meet the earth in ways unique to your body.
Here in its own form and truth.
Part of your presence in this moment.
Sensing into the toes,
The soles,
The heels,
The ankles,
The tops of the feet.
Experiencing whatever sensations are here.
Be it tingling,
Warmth,
Pressure,
Or nothing at all.
Whatever shows up,
Letting that be the practice.
Releasing the feet.
And moving awareness up into both lower legs.
The shins,
Calves,
And knees.
These structures,
Resting as they are,
Offering their own way of being here.
Noting sensations on the surface.
And deeper within.
When you're ready,
Sensing into both upper legs,
The thighs.
Feeling the weight.
Any tightness or ease?
And now allowing both legs in whole to rest in awareness just as they are.
And on the next out breath,
Letting go.
And bringing your attention now to the pelvis,
Hips,
And lower back.
A center of depth,
Feeling,
And history in its own way.
Breathing with whatever sensations are here,
However heightened they may be.
Allowing them,
Neither inviting nor refusing them.
Without trying to change anything.
Moving awareness up into the belly and lower torso.
A place of inner life and quiet knowing in whichever form it arrives.
Watching the rise and fall with each breath.
Then sensing into the chest.
The heart beating.
The lungs expanding.
The upper back and shoulders.
Noticing any tightness or holding hair?
Perhaps bringing a note of possibility.
And compassion.
Allowing it all to be just as it is.
Letting go on your next out breath.
Gathering attention and bringing it to both hands.
The palms,
Fingertips,
Fingers.
A place of contact with the world.
In whatever way your body relates.
Simply being and sensing here.
Then both wrists,
Forearms,
Elbows,
Upper arms,
And shoulders.
Sensing into both arms in whole.
As they rest.
Continuing upward and sensing into the neck and throat now.
A pathway of presence,
Breath,
And expression in forms unique to you.
Then,
Moving awareness to the back of the head.
The scalp.
The top of the head.
Breathing through whatever you find.
Bringing attention to the face that meets the world.
The forehead,
Eyes,
Nose.
Cheeks.
Ciao.
And mouth.
Allowing the whole head and face to rest in awareness.
On your next out-breath.
.
.
Letting go.
Expanding awareness now to include the body in its entirety,
From the top of the head all the way down to the toes,
Present and awake to the whole body,
Complete,
Just as it is.
Breathing with kindness and compassion for all the ways this body is.
For all the ways it carries you through this life.
Honor yourself.
For showing up exactly as you did.
However this practice unfolded,
It was enough.
Giving yourself a moment to take in what you experienced before moving into what comes next.
And when you're ready,
Returning to your full senses of the environment,
Opening closed eyes and centering yourself.
