Welcome to this meditation on letting go of control.
This meditation can be useful for all of us,
However it can be especially useful for those of us who experience symptoms of codependency.
Very often we feel uncomfortable in our relationships.
We might lack confidence in ourselves and that creates a desire to control by taking care of others or doing something of service which makes us feel needed or desired.
Today we will focus on letting go of that weight and the need to feel in control in our relationships.
To begin,
Find a quiet or comfortable place to sit or lie down.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath in.
Hold it for a few seconds and then exhale slowly.
Repeat this a few times,
Allowing your body to relax with each breath.
Now visualize yourself in a peaceful place.
It could be a beach,
A forest,
Or really any other place that makes you feel calm and relaxed.
Take a moment to imagine what it looks like in your mind,
What sounds you might hear,
What smells you might notice.
Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin or maybe the cool breeze on your face.
Let yourself be fully present in this peaceful environment.
Now as you continue to breathe deeply and slowly,
Bring to mind a situation or person that you have been trying to control.
This might be a relationship that you're trying to fix or a situation at work that you're struggling to manage.
Maybe something's been going on with your children or your partner.
Whatever it is,
See if you can picture it in your mind's eye.
Notice how you feel as you think about this situation or person.
Are you tense or anxious?
Do you feel a sense of urgency or pressure to make things right?
Take a moment to acknowledge these feelings.
Just sit with them.
Maybe even be curious about what these feelings are trying to tell you,
But try your best not to judge or dwell on them.
Now imagine that you're holding a heavy weight in your hands.
This weight represents your need for control.
Really picture it in your mind's eye.
What does it look like where you're gripping it?
What color is it?
How big is it?
Notice how heavy it feels and how much it's weighing you down.
Take a deep breath in,
And as you exhale,
Imagine yourself letting go of this weight,
Allowing it to fall away from you.
As you let go of the weight,
Repeat the following words to yourself.
I release my need for control.
I accept what I cannot change.
I trust in the universe to guide me.
Repeat these words a few times,
Allowing them to sink in and soothe your mind and body.
If you need to make adjustments to those statements to believe them,
That's okay.
Make whatever adjustments you need.
I release my need for control.
That might become,
I'm working on releasing my need for control.
I accept what I cannot change.
I trust in the universe to guide me.
Take a few moments to focus on your breath.
Breathing deeply and slowly.
Imagine yourself surrounded by a soft,
Glowing light that represents peace and acceptance.
This light can be any color you'd like.
Picture it filling you up as you continue to breathe,
From the tips of your toes to the top of your head.
Just imagine that light washing away any tension or stress that you might be holding on to.
As you come to the end of this meditation,
Take a moment to thank yourself for taking the time to let go of control and cultivate a sense of acceptance.
Remember that these habits have been in place for years,
And very likely served as a strong skill for you,
Either growing up or at some point in your relationships.
It will take practice to be able to let go of that need of control on a more regular basis.
I hope that you decide to come back and try this meditation again,
Or find other meditations or practices like it that work for you.
Whenever you're ready,
Return to the sensation of your body in its chair.
Tune into the sounds around you,
Slowly opening your eyes and taking in a few deep breaths before returning to your day.
Thank you so much for listening,
And take care.
