Alone welcome.
Take a moment to arrive exactly as you are.
You do not need to have everything figured out right now.
You do not need to have completed the thing that you've been avoiding.
You do not need to force yourself into productivity.
For these next few moments,
Your only job is to be right here.
Begin by noticing your breath.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Allow yourself to settle into this moment.
If your mind wanders,
That's okay.
Your mind is allowed to move.
Your attention is allowed to shift.
Simply notice when you've drifted.
And gently return.
Come back to your breath.
Back to your body.
Back to this moment.
Today we're going to spend some time with something many ADHD adults know very well.
The anxiety before starting.
That moment where there is something that you need to do.
Something important.
Something you may even want to do.
But something inside you feels stuck.
Maybe you've told yourself,
Why am I avoiding this?
It shouldn't be this hard.
Why can't I just start?
Take a breath.
And see if you can offer yourself a little compassion here.
Because procrastination is not always about not caring.
Very often,
Procrastination is a signal.
A sign that some part of you is feeling overwhelmed,
Uncertain,
Pressured,
Or afraid.
Bring to mind something that you've been putting off.
Not the biggest,
Most overwhelming thing,
Just something small enough that you can gently hold it in your awareness.
Notice what happens in your body as you think about beginning.
Do you feel tension?
Having us.
Restlessness,
A desire to escape maybe your mind immediately offers distractions.
Maybe you suddenly need to check your phone,
Clean something,
Research something unrelated,
Or find anything else to do.
Take a moment to notice this without judgment.
Your brain is not trying to ruin your life.
Your brain is trying to protect you from discomfort.
Imagine that anxious,
Avoidant part of yourself as a younger version of you.
A part of you that learned.
Tasks that feel hard are dangerous.
Mistakes are painful.
Disappointing people is scary.
Not knowing where to begin means something is wrong with me.
Notice this part.
And instead of pushing it away.
Offer it understanding.
You might say.
I see you.
I know that you're trying to protect me.
You don't have to carry this alone anymore.
We can take this one tiny step at a time.
Now imagine standing at the beginning of the task.
Not at the end.
Not imagining everything that needs to happen,
Just the beginning.
The first small step.
The smallest possible movement forward.
May be opening the document.
Putting one item away.
Writing one sentence.
Dialing one phone number.
Taking one breath before beginning.
You do not have to finish right now.
You only have to begin.
Take a slow breath in.
And as you breathe out,
Release the pressure to do everything perfectly.
Release the belief that you have to feel motivated before you start.
Sometimes motivation comes after action.
Sometimes confidence comes after trying.
Sometimes the first small win creates the energy for the next one.
Place a hand somewhere comforting.
Perhaps over your heart or your belly.
And repeat silently.
I can begin imperfectly.
I do not have to do everything at once.
I can make this smaller.
I can support myself through discomfort.
I am not lazy.
I am learning what helps my brain move forward.
Take a few more breaths.
Notice that you're here.
Notice that you practice something important.
You stayed with the discomfort instead of immediately running from it.
That's progress.
Not completing everything.
Just building trust with yourself.
As you return to your day,
Remember,
You do not need to wait until you feel ready.
You do not need to eliminate all discomfort.
You only need to take one compassionate step.
One moment.
One breath.
One beginning.
Thank you for taking this time to care for yourself.
