"Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" by Lewis Carroll, published in 1871, is the hilarious, much-beloved sequel to "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" (1865). In Chapter Six, 'Humpty Dumpty', Alice meets the famously fragile, rotund figure, perched on a high wall, who speaks with enormous, pompous confidence and very flexible 'definitions'... He explains that words mean exactly what he chooses them to mean, critiques poetry with great seriousness, and cheerfully predicts his own fall... When Humpty Dumpty tumbles, the King’s horses and men rush past in a clatter, and Alice is left pondering language, meaning, and who really gets to decide...
