Put Down the Weight,
A meditation for overthinking and over-responsibility.
Welcome.
This meditation is for those times when you feel as though you're carrying too much,
Holding everything together,
Thinking ahead for everyone,
Or waiting for the next problem,
Even when everything may actually be okay.
Today we're going to put some of that weight down.
We're not going to ignore anything that actually needs your attention.
We're simply going to change the way you hold it.
Make yourself comfortable either lying or sitting down.
Let your hands rest wherever they naturally want to rest.
When you're ready,
Gently close your eyes down.
We're going to begin with three breaths.
Breathe in through your nose up to your third eye and hold.
And now release the breath out your lips like a kiss.
Again,
Breathe in up through your nose to your third eye and hold.
And release out your lips like a kiss.
One more time.
Breathe in through your nose up to your third eye and hold.
And then release out your lips like a kiss.
And allow your breath to assume its natural rhythm.
Let your jaw soften.
Let your shoulders drop.
Feel whatever is underneath you supporting your weight.
You do not have to hold yourself upright now.
You do not have to work anything out.
There's nothing for you to fix in this moment.
You can just be here now.
Now bring your attention inside of your body.
Begin to scan your body from the top of your head,
Your crown.
Down through your face,
Your jaw,
Your neck,
Shoulders,
Chest,
Stomach,
Back,
Hips,
Legs,
All the way down to your feet.
Notice if there's a particular place where you tend to hold stress,
Pressure,
Or responsibility.
It may be in your shoulders.
It may be in your neck.
It may be in your chest or your stomach.
It may be somewhere completely different for you.
There is no right answer,
Just notice what's there.
Now bring your attention to that place.
Imagine that all of the weight,
Worry and responsibility you've been carrying begins to gather there.
As it gathers,
It takes the form of a heavy stone.
The stone becomes larger and it becomes heavier until it becomes a boulder.
Now imagine that this boulder is inside a strong backpack strapped across your shoulders.
Notice the straps.
Notice where they press against your body.
Notice the size and the weight of the boulder inside the pack.
Perhaps your shoulders have rounded forward beneath it.
Perhaps your body has become tense from holding it.
Perhaps you've become so used to carrying it that you've almost forgotten it's there.
And without judging yourself,
Simply ask,
When did I begin believing that I had to carry all of this?
You might remember a particular time in your life,
A period of uncertainty,
A time when a lot was expected of you,
Or a moment when you decided you had to be the strong one.
Maybe you learn to anticipate problems before they happened.
Maybe you learned that if you relax,
Something could go wrong.
Maybe carrying everything helps you feel prepared.
Needed or safe.
That is okay.
We are not judging that part of you.
That part of you is trying to help you.
It was trying to protect you in the best way it knew how.
But now we're going to show it another way.
Deep in your mind's eye,
Imagine yourself standing somewhere beautiful and safe.
It may be a garden,
A quiet clearing,
A beach.
A mountain,
Your own backyard,
Or somewhere that exists only in your imagination.
Notice what's around you.
Notice the light.
Feel the ground beneath your feet.
Become aware of the heavy backpack strapped across your shoulders.
You don't need to take it off.
You don't need to fight it.
You don't need to become angry with it.
You don't need to pretend it's not there.
You are simply going to take it off.
Now imagine that someone or something loving and supportive has come to stand beside you.
It might be someone you trust.
It may be your higher self,
Your spiritual support.
Or imagine the loving energy of life,
Or simply the loving energy of the universe.
You feel the support beside you.
You realize you no longer have to do everything alone.
Together,
You begin to loosen the straps.
Feel the first drop release from one shoulder.
And the second strap released from the other.
With loving support,
You gently lower the backpack from your body and place it on the ground.
Notice what happens in your body.
Move your shoulders back.
Allow your spine to straighten.
Let your chest open.
Take a full breath into the space that has been created.
You're no longer carrying the boulder.
The situation may still exist.
There may still be things you need to do.
There may be responsibilities that genuinely belong to you.
But they don't have to live inside of your body.
The responsibility can exist outside of you.
Without becoming a burden inside of you.
Now open up the backpack.
See the boulder inside of it,
And with the support beside you,
Carefully take the boulder out and place it directly on the ground.
Empty backpack can now disappear.
You no longer need it.
Look at the boulder sitting there.
Notice how different it looks now that it is not attached to you.
It may still be large,
It may still require some attention,
But now you can walk around it.
You can look at it from different angles.
You can choose what to do with it.
It no longer controls the way you stand,
The way you breathe,
Or how you move through your life.
Now imagine that you're given the perfect tools to begin shaping the boulder.
Maybe you have a chisel.
Maybe you have something completely magical.
You don't need to work hard.
You don't need to force anything.
You simply begin working with it.
Little by little the shape begins to change.
Sharp edges soften.
The rough surface becomes smooth.
What felt like a burden begins to become something else.
Slowly,
The boulder begins to take shape.
A strong and beautiful shape.
See it there in front of you.
Notice its shape.
Its texture,
Its color.
What was once weighing you down has become something beautiful.
Something valuable.
Something that reminds you of what you have survived,
What you have learned,
And what you now know how to transform.
You didn't have to destroy the experience.
You changed your relationship with it.
You turned that burden into beauty.
You turned that pressure into wisdom.
And you turned the weight into strength.
Move closer to your creation.
If it feels right,
Place your hands upon it.
Or stand before it and connect with its energy.
And ask,
What did this experience come to teach me?
Notice what comes.
Maybe a word or an image,
A memory,
A feeling,
Or a knowing.
Let whatever comes be,
You know.
Now ask,
What strength did I discover in myself because of this?
Perhaps you discovered courage,
Discernment,
Patience,
Resilience,
Your voice,
Your boundaries,
Your ability to begin again.
Or your capacity to handle more than you once believed you could.
Receive whatever is true for you.
Now ask,
What am I ready to stop carrying?
Perhaps it is fear,
Guilt,
Hypervigilance,
The need to control every outcome,
The belief that everything depends on you,
Or the expectation that something bad must happen whenever life feels good.
You don't need to analyze it,
Just notice what you're ready to leave behind.
And see a warm light beginning to form at the centre of your creation.
Allow the light to be whatever color feels right to you.
The light holds the wisdom of your experience,
The strength you developed,
And everything you are ready to reclaim.
See the light move from your creation towards your body and gently into your heart.
Let the wisdom settle inside of you.
Let the strength settle inside of you.
Let the learning become a part of you.
You are not taking back the burden.
You are gathering the medicine from it.
The weight stays outside of you.
The wisdom becomes part of you.
Now step back and look at your creation again.
It no longer represents what you have to carry.
It represents what you now know.
It represents what you have learned.
It represents the person you have become.
Affirm.
I honor what this experience has taught me.
I claim the wisdom.
I clean the strength.
I release the weight.
The creation is now yours,
Not as another responsibility,
But as a symbol of your transformation.
You can return to it whenever you need to remember.
I have met difficult things before,
I have learned from them,
I have grown through them and I don't need to keep carrying on.
This is my power.
Peace is my protection.
Peace is available to me now.
Take a deep breath.
Release.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
Come back to the room.
Ground in your body.
Connect to your wisdom.
Peace is available to me now.
And you are lighter than you were before.
Peace is your power.
