So much of our stress comes from leaving the present moment.
The mind travels backwards,
Replaying what happened,
What was said,
What could have been done differently.
Or it travels forwards,
Planning,
Predicting,
Preparing,
Imagining what might happen next.
And of course,
This is all natural.
The mind is designed to remember and imagine.
But sometimes it can take us far away from where we actually are.
In this body.
In this breath,
In this moment.
This meditation is a gentle reset.
A simple return to now.
There is no need for a special visualisation,
No need to create a particular feeling.
We will use what is already here.
The breath,
The body,
The sounds around you,
The support beneath you,
The senses.
Because the present moment is often quieter than the places the mind travels to.
And the more we practice returning to it.
The more available it becomes.
So allow this to be simple,
A pause,
A reset,
A return to yourself.
Just begin by making yourself comfortable.
Allow your body to settle into the position you've chosen.
You might be sitting,
You might be lying down.
You may have your eyes closed or may simply soften your gaze.
And before trying to relax,
Just simply notice.
Notice that you're here,
In this body,
In this space,
In this moment.
There is no need to create a special feeling,
No need to imagine anything perfectly,
No need to reach for calm.
This practice is a return to what is already here.
So begin with the support beneath you.
Notice where your body meets the chair,
The bed,
The mat or the floor.
Feel the points of contact.
Feel the steadiness.
Feel the simple fact that something is holding you.
Let yourself receive that support.
Just a little more.
Perhaps the shoulders can soften.
Perhaps the hands can loosen.
Perhaps the jaw can ease.
Small softenings,
Small permissions,
Nothing forced.
Just noticing what is already available.
Now bring your attention to your feet.
Notice any sensations there.
Warmth,
Coolness,
Pressure,
Tingling,
Stillness,
Or perhaps very little sensation at all,
All of it is welcome.
You are simply noticing.
Now bring your awareness to your legs,
The calves,
The knees,
The thighs.
Feel the weight of the lower body.
Feel yourself grounded.
Here.
NOW!
And if the mind has already wandered,
That is okay.
The moment that you notice you've already come back.
Gently return to the body.
Return to the support beneath you.
Return to now.
Bring your awareness to your hips,
Your pelvis,
Your lower back.
Notice any places of contact.
Any places of ease?
Any places asking for softness?
Let the body be exactly as it is.
This moment does not need improving.
It only needs noticing.
Now bring your awareness to the stomach.
Notice the natural movement of breath.
Rising.
Falling.
Expanding.
Softening.
You don't need to breathe in a particular way.
Simply notice the breath that is already breathing you.
This breath,
This body,
This moment.
Now bring awareness to the chest.
The ribs.
The heart space.
Notice whatever is here.
Openness,
Tightness,
Warmth.
Quiet.
Heaviness.
Lightness,
There is no right experience.
There is only this experience.
And you are meeting it with awareness.
Bring your attention to the shoulders,
The arms.
The hands.
Notice the hands resting.
Perhaps the temperature of the air on the skin.
Perhaps the texture beneath the fingers.
Perhaps a pulse,
A tingling or a stillness.
Let the hands become an anchor.
A simple reminder.
I am here.
I am here.
I am here.
Now bring awareness to the neck,
The throat,
The jaw,
The mouth,
The cheeks,
The eyes,
The forehead.
And let the face soften in whatever way it can.
Let the eyes rest.
Let the forehead smooth.
And now sense the whole body.
Breathing.
Supported.
Present.
Not as an idea,
As an experience.
Your body is here.
Your breath is here.
You are here.
Now gently widen your awareness to sound.
Notice sounds close by.
Perhaps sounds in the room.
Perhaps sounds outside the room.
Perhaps sounds further away.
You don't need to identify them.
You don't need to like or dislike them.
Let sounds arrive.
Let sounds pass.
Each sound simply reminding you that you are here,
In this moment.
Now notice the space around your body,
The air touching your skin,
The temperature,
The stillness or movement in the room.
The sense of being surrounded by space.
Let your awareness become a little wider.
Body,
Breath,
Sound,
Space,
All happening now.
And if the mind travels to later,
Gently return.
If the mind travels to before.
Gently return.
If the mind begins planning,
Replaying,
Wondering or analysing,
Gently return.
There is nothing wrong with the mind traveling.
The practice is the return.
Again and again.
Back to the body.
Back to sound.
Back to breath.
Back to now.
You might quietly say to yourself this breath,
This body,
This moment.
Again.
This breath,
This body,
This moment.
And let those words become an anchor.
Simple,
Steady,
Present.
And perhaps now imagine the mind as a room,
A room that has become a little busy,
Full of noise,
Full of movement,
Full of things waiting for your attention.
And with each breath imagining opening a window.
Fresh air moving through.
Space returning.
Light entering.
The room becoming clearer.
Not empty,
Just clearer.
Not perfect,
Just more spacious.
Breathing in fresh air.
Breathing out.
Softening.
Breathing in,
Present.
Breathing out,
Letting the noise settle.
And now let go of the image.
Return to what is real and present.
The body.
The breath.
The sounds.
The support beneath you.
The space around you.
This is the reset.
Nothing complicated,
Nothing dramatic.
Just one moment of noticing.
One breath,
One return,
One gentle pause.
And for a few moments now,
Simply rest in this awareness.
Body,
Breath,
Sound,
Space,
Now.
Pause.
And if thoughts come in,
Let them be part of the wider space.
You don't have to follow them.
You don't have to push them away.
You can simply return to what is here.
The body,
The breath,
The sounds,
The room,
The support,
The now.
And perhaps you can feel how the present moment has a steadiness to it,
A simplicity.
It asks very little,
Just your attention.
Just your awareness.
Just your willingness to come back again and again.
And now begin to notice the support beneath you more clearly.
The room around you.
The sounds.
The breath moving in your body.
And perhaps take one fuller breath in.
And release it slowly.
Bring small movements into your fingers,
Into your toes.
Maybe stretch gently if that feels good.
And when you're ready,
Open your eyes,
Returning calm,
Clear,
Present,
Connected to yourself.
And knowing that whenever your mind feels full,
You can reset gently through the breath,
Through the body.
Through the senses.
Through one simple moment of coming back to now.
