What does it mean to be obligated—not from pressure, but from purpose? In this 90-second meditation, Kerith Spencer-Shapiro shares a powerful insight from the Pardes Yosef, taught in the name of the RaShB” A (Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet), on the sacred role of obligation in our lives. According to this teaching, obligation is not a burden but a gift—an opportunity to align ourselves with a higher calling. Each day becomes a chance to deepen our responsibility to ourselves, others, and the Divine. This meditation offers a quiet space to explore how sacred obligation can root us in meaning, mindfulness, and spiritual integrity. Take a moment to reflect, breathe, and recommit. Consider how obligation can uplift rather than weigh you down.

Pardes Yosef taught in the name of Rashba that it is a mitzvah to publicize the names of the people who commit themselves to some form of mitzvah,

Even though tzedakah or charity should be given confidentially.

When we make a commitment within our own hearts,

We most likely have every intention of filling it and somehow when that commitment is made to another person or declared publicly,

We know that it's more likely that we will be able to live up to our commitment.

Rest your eyes,

Relaxing body and breath.

Call to mind a commitment you have made to yourself.

It could be as simple as,

I'm going to take care of my physical body,

Or I'm going to treat my family members more kindly.

Sit with this intention for a few breaths.

When you come to the conclusion of this meditation,

Offer it publicly.
