Why can't we sleep?

We lie here in our beds,

Thoughts racing this way and that,

But all the things we need to do,

And all the things we haven't done.

We feel guilt,

We judge ourselves,

We are on a never-ending cycle of feeling we need to work things out.

We are overthinking in a circular pattern,

Imagining every single way to solve what needs to be solved.

We identify with our problems,

We become our problems.

We are on a hamster wheel in our heads,

And we don't know how to step off.

It is a tiring,

Exhaustive process,

Yet we can't sleep.

What we don't realize is that when we focus on our problems,

We are giving them energy.

We are giving them life force.

Most of the time,

Solutions to problems come when we are calm,

And often not even thinking about the problem.

Creativity solves problems.

Creativity comes when we are calm,

At rest,

Even in our sleep.

Let us instead focus on what it will be like when our problems are solved,

Not the process and getting there,

The feeling that we have when we are there.

Come with me now as I lead you with a visualization,

A journey into peace and calm.

I am going to guide you on a little vacation from your thoughts.

You can't turn them off completely because our brains just don't work that way,

But you can choose to let them merely pass without judgment,

Like the clouds floating by in the sky.

Your vacation is at the beach.

This is a well-deserved holiday.

It is warm.

The sun feels beautiful on your skin.

There is a nice breeze,

And the air has that wonderful salty ocean fragrance.

You lay back on your lounging chair,

And you are under some beautiful palm trees just at the edge of the sand.

The view is absolutely stunning.

You can feel your body soften and relax.

This is beautiful.

The sky is a wonderful blue.

There are a few wisps of clouds overhead,

And on the horizon,

Far out to sea,

We can see a gathering of puffy white clouds.

The ocean looks almost turquoise against the sky.

In the sand on the beach is a nice golden light brown.

Off in the distance you see a young family trying to get a kite in the air.

And even though they seem to be struggling with it,

It looks like they're having the time of their lives.

How beautiful to witness such joy.

As you let go of tension in your body,

You realize you're feeling quite sleepy.

On the table beside you is a thick soft cloth.

You grab it and drape it over your eyes.

Now all is dark.

The birds are calm and peaceful,

Just doing their thing.

The sound of the waves is like beautiful music,

Slowly lulling you deeper into relaxation.

Here are some positive affirmations to help with calming your mind.

Repeat them after me,

Silently in your mind.

Eyes closed,

Say them with intention.

I deserve this rest.

I have accomplished enough today.

I am enough.

I trust that the divine,

The universe,

Will organize to help me while I sleep.

All is as it should be right now.

Everything is okay.

I am okay.

I deserve this much needed sleep.

My eyes are heavy.

My body is relaxed.

I am breathing slowly and evenly.

I am one with the universe.

I am loved and cherished by all creation exactly as I am.

I feel myself drifting deeper towards sleep.

I feel calm and at ease.

I deserve this rest.

I have accomplished enough today.

I am enough.

I trust that the divine,

The universe,

Will organize to help me while I sleep.

All is as it should be right now.

Everything is okay.

I am okay.

I deserve this much needed sleep.

My eyes are so heavy.

My body is completely relaxed.
