Welcome.
This is a meditation for tender emotions.
It's for a day when there's some sensitivity.
A tenderness.
Maybe a heaviness to the emotions.
Maybe there is a bit of sadness.
Or an undercurrent of worry or anxiety.
Something that wants to be felt.
One of the most helpful things we can do is to allow those emotions and experience them.
So in this practice,
We'll let those tender feelings come up.
We'll offer them compassion.
And help them move along.
Let's begin by taking some slow,
Deep breaths.
And release the air slowly,
Completely emptying the lungs,
Before you take the next inhale Feel the air in your nose,
Your mouth,
Your lungs.
Filling your chest.
As the chest opens,
Let yourself open to whatever emotions are here with no resistance.
Often when we are resisting tender emotions,
We distract ourselves.
We reach for something that numbs,
Like watching TV or scrolling on our phones.
Or we work harder.
Or dive into the busyness of the day and push the feelings aside.
Sometimes that's necessary just to get on with the day.
But when there's time.
.
.
Letting the feelings be felt can be the most loving,
Kind thing we can do for ourselves.
It helps them release more effortlessly.
When we push a feeling away or numb it,
It's still there waiting to be felt.
And it might come out sideways later as stress,
Anger,
Irritability,
Or even physical discomfort in the body.
Each time we let ourselves feel an emotion,
Even for a short while,
We build our tolerance for experiencing emotions.
And as we start to see that emotions are like passing weather.
They move through us.
Then we are the steady,
Conscious observer.
Noticing and experiencing them as they pass.
We can become more confident that feeling our emotions doesn't have to mean being overwhelmed by them.
Overwhelm often comes from resistance,
Or from getting caught up in the story and the meaning we make of the emotion.
So for this practice,
We'll simply experience the emotion.
You might notice the why.
The story behind it.
And that can be helpful.
Sometimes though,
There isn't a clear reason why a feeling has come up.
Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint why an emotion is there at all.
And that's okay.
There's work to be done on the level of thinking.
And there's experiencing on the level of feeling.
Where not much thinking needs to be involved.
So if there are things on your mind Gently release the story,
Just for right now.
Gently release the why.
Just for right now.
And hold the emotion with tender,
Loving care for a few moments.
Let's breathe into that emotion.
Imagine the space around it.
Notice how it sits in your body.
Is it moving around or is it still?
Is it solid?
Dense or heavy.
Maybe it's light and airy.
Whatever the sensations are.
Everything is fine,
Just as it is.
Maybe it's spread all over your body.
Maybe it's in one spot.
Your chest.
Your throat.
Your stomach.
Maybe your head.
Wherever you're feeling it,
Let your attention rest there gently.
With each inhale a little space around the feeling.
With each exhale,
Let your body soften around it.
There's nothing to fix,
Just allowing,
Just feeling.
If it feels right.
Place your hands on your heart.
Or wherever the feeling lives in your body right now.
Feel the warmth of your hands.
And send compassion and love to this tender feeling.
You might silently say,
I see you.
It's okay that you're here.
I'm here with you.
Let the feeling be held the way you'd hold someone you love.
Notice whether it shifts at all,
Softens,
Moves,
Or changes shape.
And if it stays just as it is,
That's okay too.
Remember.
You are the sky.
And this feeling is the weather moving through.
You are the conscious,
Steady observer.
Just curiously noticing these emotions moving through,
Holding them with compassion,
And allowing them to be here as long as they need to before moving along.
You can feel those feelings fully,
And still be steady underneath.
Now,
Gently ask yourself,
What do I need today?
Maybe it's something simple.
A glass of water or a walk outside.
Maybe it's holding yourself a little closer today.
Offering yourself more kindness or slowness.
Maybe you crave closeness,
Connection with another person.
Sending a message to someone you care about.
Reaching out to a friend.
Hugging family member.
Or maybe what you want most is to express these feelings in some way,
Through writing,
Through creating something,
Through moving or dancing or walking.
Or just by speaking out loud what you're feeling,
Even if it's to yourself,
Or in a prayer,
Or into the voice recorder on your phone.
Expressing those feelings can be beautiful and cleansing.
Whatever it is,
Let yourself have it if you can.
Take one more slow,
Deep breath in… Let it all the way out.
Thank yourself for taking this time to feel and to care for yourself in this tender way.
Know that you can return to this practice whenever you need it.
And as you move into your day.
May you carry a little of this gentleness with you.
