Hello and welcome to this guided meditation to support you through your fear of flying.
In the next few minutes we'll be embarking on a journey together to help you overcome your anxieties and fears related to flying.
This meditation is most effective when listened to repeatedly on the build up to your travel day.
Feel free to listen to it before you go to sleep or in moments when you're feeling anxious or overcome with worry in anticipation for your upcoming journey.
Please know that this meditation is here for you whenever you need it.
So before we begin,
Let's find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down.
Gently close your eyes and take a deep calming breath in through your nose,
Allowing your abdomen to rise with your inhale and exhaling slowly and fully through your mouth,
Imagining that as you exhale you're releasing any tension or worries.
Let's do this two more times together,
Inhaling deeply and exhaling completely,
With each breath feeling yourself become more relaxed and centred for this meditation and focusing on your breath as we continue on,
Knowing that your breathing is a tool at your disposal for whenever you feel overcome with anxiety or worry.
And so from this centred place,
Let's set an intention to replace our fears with a sense of security and confidence,
Envisioning yourself as a brave traveller ready to embrace the journey ahead of you and maybe even enjoy the wonders of air travel.
Settling into this moment,
Feeling the heaviness of your limbs,
The only thing moving is your heartbeat and the slow rise and fall of your tummy as you breathe in and out,
And focusing on that dark space beneath your eyelids,
You begin to see a picture playing out,
Almost as though you're watching a movie of yourself.
See yourself arriving at the airport,
Feeling relaxed and excited.
The bustling airport around you is a place of opportunity and adventure.
You can see the excitement in the eyes of other travellers and the friendly faces of airport staff who are there to assist you and keep you safe.
Imagine what it feels like to have that sense of warm anticipation as you make your way through security.
Your steps are light and free and you can see no visual signs that you're feeling uneasy or anxious.
Your face is relaxed,
Your jaw is not tense.
You look happy and unbothered about the journey ahead.
Now let's focus on the airplane itself,
Visualising the aircraft in your mind as we acknowledge its engineering as a magnificent creation,
Designed to carry you safely through the skies.
Just like magic,
It will carry you from one place to another completely safely,
And you can picture yourself boarding this plane with a calm smile and a steady heartbeat as you walk through the aircraft.
You settle into your seat,
Clipping the seatbelt around you,
Knowing that soon the vibrations of the engine will begin and it will act as a gentle rhythm,
A sort of lullaby to help you relax into the moment.
Imagine the team of skilled pilots in the cockpit who have trained and practised so hard to become very proficient and dedicated to ensuring a smooth and peaceful journey.
Visualise the complex network of support that goes into ensuring your safety.
The flight attendants' friendly faces,
The ground staff,
The engineers of the aircraft all designed this airplane for you to travel safely.
And as the airplane begins to taxi towards leaving the airport,
The ground staff are guiding the plane,
Ensuring its safety and guiding it towards the vast sky ahead.
You are never alone in this experience.
You may feel worried that turbulence might occur during your flight,
But we can acknowledge those thoughts and worries as they arise and let them go without judgement.
Knowing that turbulence is simply a part of the journey,
Just like challenges in life,
But trusting that however uncomfortable it might be,
You're still safe.
Your airplane will continue to travel through the sky,
Even through a few little bumps.
You can visualise yourself during turbulence,
And you can see how calm,
Collected and peaceful you are in this trust,
Breathing steadily and knowing that the aircraft is designed to handle any moments of turbulence.
As the flight progresses,
You can see outside of your window the world below transforming.
Clouds give way to landscapes painted with beauty,
Rolling hills,
Winding rivers and sparkling cities.
Because you feel so calm and collected,
You can actually take a moment to appreciate the wonder of being so high up in the sky,
So safe and witnessing such beautiful sights.
Feeling a deep sense of accomplishment as you realise how far you've come,
How you have worked with your fear and are now soaring above it and travelling with complete peace having let go of your fears.
Knowing that you can affirm at any point during your next period of air travel,
I am safe,
I am safe,
I am safe.
You can inhale courage and calm and exhale fear and anxiety.
More often you listen to this positive flying experience,
You're reprogramming your mind to associate flying with ease,
Excitement and almost adventure.
Our mind doesn't know the difference between what is real and what we envision or imagine in our mind,
But when we're very afraid,
It might take some time for this new version of this journey to settle within your consciousness.
Bringing your awareness back to your body and when you're ready opening your eyes,
Knowing you can return to this meditation whenever you feel the need.
