Hi,
I'm Sophie from Distress Lab.
I remember what I used to think about meditation.
Sitting on the floor,
Cross-legged,
In silence.
Oh,
And stop thinking?
Mm-mm,
Can't do that.
Well,
Forget all you think you know about meditation and let yourself be surprised by how easy it is.
There are many ways,
Many styles of meditation,
But in itself it actually comes down to this.
First,
You choose an object of attention.
Your breath,
A candlelight,
A mantra.
Then you find yourself a comfortable seat and you close your eyes and breathe.
Bring your awareness to the object of your attention.
At a certain point,
You let it go and you find yourself in the gap,
The sweet spot of the universe,
The space between your breath,
The space between your thoughts,
This beautiful nothingness of peace.
And this might only be for a split second,
But the more you practice and the longer it gets.
You'll start thinking again.
Our brain is designed to think.
So no stopping of the thoughts here.
Just notice you're drifting and gently bring yourself back to the object of your attention.
That's it.
And you repeat this process as many times as you like.
So simple and so easy and it feels so good.
So let's practice for a minute right now.
We'll use the breath as object of our attention.
It's easy.
You always have it with you.
So make yourself comfortable and whenever you're ready,
Gently close your eyes.
And just start by feeling into the breath,
Noticing the air flowing in and out.
Aware of this inhale and of this exhale.
And when your mind wanders,
It's perfectly normal.
Just come back to the breath and start again.
Notice the next inhale and the next exhale.
Simply breathing in and out.
And when you notice you've been drifting again,
This is totally fine.
That's the practice.
Gently bring yourself back to the breath and continue as long as you wish.
Now let's take a deep inhale and a gentle exhale.
And when you feel ready,
Reopening your eyes.
Welcome back.
How did it feel?
Well,
You've been meditating.
Simple isn't it?
Thank you for joining and have a beautiful day.
