I met Han How at his beautifully designed house. There was a high-ceilinged open-air space where he holds his sessions that is connected to the main house. You could feel a nice breeze flow across the space and hear the leaves brushing in the surrounding trees. The wildlife was quiet, waiting for the cooler evening to go about their business and socializing. Han How's style has a slow and steady rhythm. Always returning to a root note, then playing two or three other notes after that has a very hypnotizing effect. The comfort and safety of something familiar allows your mind to wander and leave your body behind. Transitioning to the drum, the tempo speeds up and the steady repetition is carried over until he ends with the ethereal chime harp finally freeing himself from any structure or sequence. A beautiful journey.
