Sound Bath Sessions 262: Lumi Higashi
I recorded Lumi in the 100-year-old Former Tanaka family Villa. It was a beautiful space all made of wood, tatami, and shoji screens overlooking a small garden with the smoking Kagoshima volcano in the distance. The morning weather was warm with cool breezes occasionally flowing through the house. We set up in a large room with tatami. Hitomi brought her large white bowls on one end of the room, and Lumi setup her crystal bowls on the other. Lumi's bowls have a delicate modulations that are pleasing to the ear. She plays delicately in this track letting the passing cars be heard in the distance. Many heavy trucks and airplanes passed by at this time, filling in the lower end. I love how they feature in the recording, Lumi incorporating the noises almost as instruments, almost as if she could play them too. This had a surprising finish as the pure hum of a propeller aircraft flew by matching the sound of the last note. Beautiful.
