Sound Bath Sessions 143: Kaman Yip
Kaman finally got her new studio in PMQ, a few floors up from Candace's. The higher location gave some distance from the street noises below. The adjacent spaces are business which kept the entire area pretty quiet. The surrounding city noises of a Friday evening can be heard, with passing trucks, mostly in traffic. Then we heard it, right on cue, an odd swishing, water-like sound. I tried to figure out what it was, peeking my ear out of my headphones and finally concluding it was a distant pile driver echoing through the narrow streets. If I sat really still, I could feel it through the floor. Its constant, steady rhythm reminded me of a heartbeat, or breathing. It was amazing how such a violent action sounded so- human. Perfectly placed, the recording would have been incomplete without it. It was just our luck to have such a consistent theme over such a long journey: the sweeper in Shatin Park, kids in Tai Wai, the pile driver in Sheung Wan.
