Grab a writing tool and a pad of paper! In this creative exercise, we will cultivate our meditative listening skills while incorporating our intuitive creative energy into the practice. I especially love doing this exercise with watercolor pencils and then adding water later to enhance the design.

Welcome to this listening deeply exercise.

For this exercise,

You'll need a piece of paper and a pencil or a marker or a pen.

So please pause this for a moment and grab a sheet of paper and a writing tool.

So once you have your tools for this exercise,

Find a comfortable place where you can sit,

Find a comfortable seat that you can be in for a while.

And we'll have our pen in hand and our piece of paper resting where we can easily draw on it.

Begin to close your eyes.

Feel the sit bones rooted,

The spine long through the crown of the head.

And placing the writing tool on the paper,

Just let your hand relax and start to open the aperture of your ears.

There will be sounds that come and go.

And we're not labeling them as good or bad,

Or even allowing them to open our eyes.

We're allowing our ears to reach out,

To listen as far out as they can,

Picking up every sound.

These sounds that come and go,

The impermanent nature of sound.

And allowing even my voice to just be one of those sounds that comes and goes.

You don't have to try to intellectualize it.

Your mind will do that automatically for you.

Listening deeply.

And as you start to identify sounds,

Allow your hand to move.

Allow it to create shape associated with sound.

Again,

No need to wonder what you're drawing or looking or judging.

Just creating shape with all of the different sounds.

Keep allowing your hand to move.

Keeping the ears wide open.

The different sounds.

Not judging where your hand is going,

Just letting it be free.

And then pausing for a moment,

Lifting your pen.

Maybe looking at what it is that's in front of you.

Seeing if you can actually identify the shape of certain sounds around you.

If you'd like to take it a step further,

I'd encourage you to grab colored pencils or markers and fill in certain areas.

Continue to play in this drawing open space through ears wide open.

Just allowing everything that's outside of you to come in through this portal of perception.

Combining the spirituality and creativity,

This openness,

Bringing this formlessness into form.

Enjoy.

Thank you.
