If you're still awake,
Nothing has gone wrong.
You do not have to make sleep happen tonight.
You do not have to quiet the mind.
You do not have to relax perfectly.
And you do not need to keep checking whether sleep is getting closer.
For now,
Stop working on sleep.
Let rest be enough.
Feel the weight of your body on the bed.
The head.
Shoulders.
Pelvis.
Legs.
Heals.
Notice that the bed is already holding you.
Let some of your weight go.
Feel the hands,
The jaw,
The tongue,
The space around the eyes.
No need to soften anything on command.
Just notice where effort is still present.
And allow a little less of it.
Now notice the breath.
Let it be ordinary.
No deep breathing,
No counting,
No technique.
The bread comes in,
The bread leaves.
The next breath arrives on its own.
Let the body breathe for you.
Perhaps the mind is thinking about tomorrow.
Replaying today.
Counting the hours left.
Wondering why you are still awake?
Notice what happened.
The mind started working on sleep.
Step out of the work.
Nothing to calculate.
Nothing to measure.
You can be awake without turning wakefulness into a problem.
Feel the pillow beneath your head.
The sheets against your body.
The temperature of the air.
The weight of one hand.
Stay with something simple,
Something that does not need to take you anywhere.
And notice if there is an impulse to do something.
To adjust.
To check.
To try another technique.
To make yourself sleep.
For one moment,
Do nothing.
No correction.
No improvement.
No next step.
If the mind asks,
Am I getting sleepy?
No answer is needed.
If it asks,
How long have I been awake?
Leave the calculation unfinished.
If it says,
I need to sleep now.
Let that be a thought.
Not in instruction.
Sleep is not something you can command.
But you can stop supervising it.
Give up the job of making yourself sleep.
Find one place in the body that feels neutral.
The hands,
The feet,
The back of the legs.
The weight of the head.
Rest your attention there.
Not because it will make you sleep,
Simply because it is here.
If attention wanders,
Let it wander.
When you notice,
Return.
No frustration.
No scorekeeping.
And for now,
Leave tomorrow alone.
How you will feel.
How much sleep you will get.
What the morning might be like.
You do not need to solve the whole night from this moment.
This bit.
This breath.
This moment.
Enough.
You do not need to turn rest into sleep.
Let rest be rest.
Perhaps sleep comes soon.
Perhaps it takes longer.
Neither needs your supervision.
Stop adjusting yourself towards sleep.
Let the body be as it is.
Let the breath be as it is.
Let the mind be as it is.
Thoughts can continue without needing your attention.
A thought begins.
You notice it.
And you do not have to finish it.
The body on the bed.
The breath moving.
The night unfolding without your help.
Drop the question,
When will I fall asleep?
You do not need that answer right now.
You are not trying to cross from awake into asleep.
You are simply doing less.
Less checking.
Less chasing.
Less effort.
Sleep does not need your help.
Your body knows how to cross that threshold.
You can stop standing at the door.
Let the body rest.
Let the mind become less important.
And let sleep arrive in its own time.
