Hello and a warm welcome to Insight Timer.
I am Rahul Singh.
The day may be over,
But perhaps something inside you has not quite stopped.
The body is style.
The room is square.
There may be nothing more you need to do tonight.
And still,
Some part of you remains alert.
Perhaps the mind is replaying.
Planning,
Checking,
Anticipating.
Or perhaps there is no clear thought at all.
Only the feeling of being tired but still switched on.
Being tired and being ready to rest are not always the same thing.
Cortisol is one of the hormones that helps the body stay awake,
Responsive and ready to meet the demands of the day.
It is not something bad and tonight we are not going to try to control it.
Sometimes the demands have ended,
But the body is still receiving signals to remain engaged.
One more message.
One more problem.
One more scroll.
One more thought about tomorrow.
One more conversation continued in the mind.
The day keeps ending and we keep reopening it.
So tonight,
We are going to do something very simple.
We are going to stop participating in the day.
Settle into the surface beneath you.
Notice the jaw.
The shoulders.
The hands.
See where some effort can be released.
Let the job become easier.
Let the shoulders give up a little work.
Let the hands become soft.
And now notice the eyes.
Even with the eyelids closed,
There can still be a feeling of looking.
Searching.
Watching.
Waiting.
Let the eyes become less interested.
Nothing more needs to be searched for tonight.
No perfect relaxation.
Just Less Effort.
The body does not always settle because we tell it to settle.
Often it settles when it discovers that nothing more is being asked of it.
So begin removing the requests.
Know Solving Tomorrow.
No reviewing today.
No trying to make sleep happen.
Just Less Involvement.
Notice the breath.
Not a deep breath.
Not a special breath.
One natural inhale.
And one easy exhale.
Let the exhale finish without hurry.
Then leave the bread alone.
Let the body breathe for itself.
There is another habit that often follows us into the night.
Monitoring.
Am I relaxed enough?
Will I sleep soon?
Why am I still awake?
Is this working?
And without realizing it,
Rest becomes another thing we are supervising.
You cannot fully let go while constantly checking whether you have let go.
So stop checking.
You only need to stop adding more effort.
Now notice whether tomorrow has entered the room with you.
A meeting.
A decision.
A conversation.
Something unfinished.
Something you need to remember.
The mind may call this preparation,
And sometimes it is.
But eventually,
Preparation becomes repetition.
There comes a point at night when thinking about tomorrow no longer prepares you for tomorrow.
It only keeps today alive.
And very few days end completely finished.
There is almost always something unanswered,
Something incomplete,
Something waiting.
If everything had to feel complete before you could rest,
Rest would rarely begin.
Rest begins when unfinished things are allowed to remain unfinished.
So let tomorrow remain tomorrow.
Let the unanswered thing stay unanswered.
Let the undecided thing stay undecided.
Let the conversation stop where it is.
Not everything needs resolution before sleep.
A thought may appear.
Notice it without continuing it.
A thought can appear without becoming a task.
You do not have to respond to everything the mind presents.
That is part of rest.
Now feel the body again.
The hands,
The belly.
The links.
Let the hands become heavier.
Let the belly move naturally.
Let the legs give their weight to the surface beneath them.
Just Less Holding.
Sometimes we wait to feel calm before we allow ourselves to rest.
But perhaps the order can be reversed.
You can begin resting before calm has fully arrived.
You do not have to earn rest by becoming peaceful first.
The mind may still be active,
The body may still carry some tension.
You may still feel awake.
None of that prevents you from doing less.
Less monitoring.
Less preparing.
Less Holding.
Less following.
Tonight,
Remember one simple movement.
Close what belongs to today.
Release one place of effort.
Leave tomorrow unopened.
Close.
Release.
Leave.
That is enough.
You do not calm the night by fighting what is keeping you awake.
You calm it by gradually withdrawing your participation.
You stop rehearsing.
You stop checking.
You stop solving.
You stop trying to produce sleep.
And slowly,
There is less for the mind and body to remain involved with.
The day ends twice.
Once outside you,
When the work is finished.
The lights are lured.
The world becomes quieter.
And once inside you,
When you stop carrying it forward.
Tonight,
Let the second ending happen.
Let today remain unfinished.
Let tomorrow remain unopened.
Let the breath happen.
Let the body become heavy.
If a thought appears,
Let it remain unfinished.
If sleep comes,
Let it come.
The day is finished outside you.
Now,
Allow it to finish inside you.
Let the night take over from here.
