Hello and a warm welcome to Insight Timer.
I'm Rahul Singh.
If you're lying awake calculating how much sleep is left,
This is for you.
Maybe you looked at the time,
Then started doing the maths.
If I fall asleep now,
I'll get six hours.
A little later,
Five and a half,
Then five,
And suddenly every minute feels expensive.
You're no longer simply awake,
You're measuring the night,
Watching it disappear,
Trying to work out what tomorrow will feel like.
Tonight,
You don't need to do that.
You don't need to know how much sleep you're going to get.
If you can,
Allow your eyes to close.
Feel the weight of your head against the pillow.
The shoulders.
The bag.
The hips.
The legs.
Notice that the bed is already holding you.
You do not have to hold yourself up anymore.
And perhaps some part of your mind is still keeping score.
How late is it?
How many hours remain?
Will I be exhausted tomorrow?
Will I manage?
You don't need to answer any of those questions tonight.
Not now.
Because once the mind begins calculating sleep,
Sleep becomes something to monitor,
Something to achieve,
Something you are waiting for.
And then even rest can start to feel like work.
So for the next few minutes,
We are going to stop measuring.
Not because sleep doesn't matter.
Of course it matters.
And of course you want it.
But wanting sleep does not mean you have to supervise it.
You do not have to keep checking whether it is happening yet.
Let your attention come to the breath.
Not to change it,
Just notice one breath arriving and leaving.
Then another.
No countdown,
No target.
Just this breath.
And when the mind says,
But I need enough sleep tonight,
Notice that thought.
You do not have to argue with it.
You do not have to reassure yourself.
Simply hear it and let it pass.
I do need to know right now.
Again,
I don't need to know right now.
Maybe tonight will give you the sleep you hoped for.
Maybe it won't.
You do not have to decide that now.
And you do not have to spend the night preparing for how tired you might feel tomorrow.
Tomorrow does not need to be lived tonight.
If the mind begins travelling into the morning,
Come back.
To the feeling of the pillow.
The temperature of the air.
The weight of the blanket.
One quiet breath.
If you feel the urge to check the time,
Notice the urge itself.
You don't have to follow it.
Stay with one breath instead.
In and out.
The exact time does not need your attention.
You already know enough.
It is night time.
You are in bed.
Nothing else needs to be measured.
And there is another possibility tonight.
You can stop demanding that wakefulness end immediately.
You can let this moment be what it is,
Without turning it into evidence that the night is going badly.
Even if tonight is not the night you hoped for,
You do not have to spend it fighting.
Let that land.
You do not have to fight the night.
Feel the joy.
If it wants to soften,
Let it.
The space around the eyes.
The shoulders.
The hands.
The belly.
Nothing to force,
Nothing to check.
And no need to ask,
Is this working?
That question can rest too.
For now,
There is only this bed.
This spread.
This moment.
Sleep does not need to be solved.
If thoughts come,
Let them come.
If wakefulness is here,
Let it be here.
You do not have to follow every thought.
You do not have to measure every minute.
You can become less involved.
Less involved with the clock.
Less involved with tomorrow.
Less involved with the question,
How much sleep will I get?
And when that question returns,
Let your answer be simple.
I don't need to know right now.
There is nothing more to calculate.
Nothing more to predict.
Nothing more to prepare for.
Tomorrow can wait.
The clock can continue without you.
The night can continue without your supervision.
And you can simply lie here.
Breathing.
Resting.
Not waiting.
Not measuring.
Not trying.
Just here.
And if sleep comes,
You do not need to notice the moment it begins.
You can let yourself disappear into it without keeping watch.
