Hello,

My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.

I really enjoy writing stories and I love sharing them here with you.

So make yourself comfortable,

Settle back,

Because my next story is about to begin.

The Pink Teddy Bear Barry was an extremely happy bear because she had the greatest owner in the world.

They were best friends and loved each other very much.

Barry was a cuddly soft pink teddy bear and spent every day in the warm arms of the little girl she belonged to.

They were quite inseparable.

The little girl would take Barry everywhere she went,

Except to school.

Barry couldn't go to school as bears were not allowed,

Not even cuddly soft pink teddy bears.

Barry had to stay home and wait for her friend to return and then they would play together until bedtime.

When the little girl was ready for bed she would hold Barry in her arms and that's how they slept together every night.

Barry's favourite time of year was summer when her friend didn't have to go to school.

They would spend most days playing together in the garden because the weather was lovely and warm.

Whatever the little girl was doing Barry would always be by her side.

One really hot summer's day the little girl's mum brought her daughter around Padlin Pool which they filled with water.

The little girl climbed into the pool and the water felt so good on her warm skin.

The little girl didn't want Barry to get wet so she put her beloved teddy bear in a chair next to the pool so they could see each other.

The little girl loved playing in the pool but before long her mum called her in for dinner.

Feeling very hungry she got out of the pool and ran indoors dripping wet,

Leaving Barry still sitting in the chair.

Barry looked around wondering why the little girl hadn't taken her indoors too.

It was warm in the sun and her pink fur was making her feel very hot.

A few minutes later a robin flew down and sat on the edge of the Padlin Pool.

Barry watched as he leant into the water and took a drink.

I wish I could have a drink said Barry to herself.

Why don't you come over here and drink with me?

Asked the robin.

It's very refreshing on this hot summer's day.

I can't actually walk replied Barry pleased that someone could understand her.

She often tried to talk to her friend but humans didn't seem to understand teddy bear language.

The robin flew over and sat on the arm of the chair next to Barry.

What are you doing out here in the hot sun?

He asked,

Pecking at some crumbs he found on the chair.

My friend ran into the house for dinner and left me out here replied Barry sadly.

I'm sure she'll be back to get me soon.

Well don't get too hot while you're waiting said the robin.

I have to go now,

Things to do.

Bye!

And he flew away.

Barry was getting even hotter now and wondered where the little girl was.

Sitting with the sun beaming down on her fur,

Barry drifted off to sleep.

Suddenly Barry was woken by the little girl as she grabbed her from the chair and hugged her tightly.

Barry felt so happy when she saw her best friend smiling down at her.

Barry was glad she hadn't been forgotten as it was getting dark now and she didn't really like being alone in the dark.

Soon summer was over and the little girl went back to school.

Barry spent the day waiting for her to come home and then in the evening they would play together.

Summer turned to autumn and the leaves on the trees began changing into beautiful shades of red,

Orange and yellow before they fell from the trees and settled all over the ground.

The garden where they lived had lots of trees and the leaves soon piled up all around.

The little girl loved holding Barry high in the air as she ran through the leaves making them fly everywhere.

One afternoon the little girl's mum asked her daughter to rake up the leaves as the garden was looking so messy.

It was a big job for a little girl to do but she liked to help her mum and so she didn't complain.

After sitting Barry on the ground to watch she got to work.

All around Barry the little girl created some big piles of leaves and then she moved further down the garden to rake up the leaves there.

A little while later,

Quite unexpectedly,

The wind started blowing.

It was only a gentle breeze but it delicately lifted a few leaves off the ground.

Barry watched the leaves as they danced around in front of her.

Then suddenly the wind blew harder and some of the leaves in the piles swirled around in the air.

The wind became stronger and stronger and more leaves started flying about.

Barry felt a little scared because the leaves were swirling and falling upon her.

Then a big gust of wind blew her over and as she lay on the ground all went black as the leaves completely covered her.

As she lay amongst the leaves Barry heard the little girl calling her name.

The little girl had been working so hard in the garden that she had forgotten where she had left her teddy bear.

Barry tried to call out but she knew it wouldn't help as humans couldn't hear her teddy bear voice.

Barry felt sad when she heard her friend cry and even sadder when her friend's mum called her into the house as a storm was coming.

Barry felt all alone.

She was cold and scared amongst the dark leaves.

She longed to be held in the little girl's warm arms where she always felt so safe and loved.

Hey,

What are you doing lying here in my leaves?

Asked a tiny voice near Barry's head.

The leaves started to move letting in a bit of light and Barry could see a hedgehog looking at her.

Hello,

Said Barry,

Happy to no longer be alone.

I was watching my friend rake leaves when all of a sudden the wind blew the leaves all over me.

I don't think she can find me now.

Well,

There's no one in the garden,

Said the hedgehog,

And a storm is coming,

So you better move away fast.

I can't walk,

Said Barry,

Feeling a little anxious.

Can you help move me,

Please?

I don't think I can,

Replied the hedgehog.

You're much bigger than me.

I'm really sorry I can't help,

But I have to get going.

And he ran off.

Once again the leaves started to move and soon they were away from Barry's head,

Allowing her to see the sky above her.

Then a squirrel's face appeared over her.

Hey,

Are you lying on any nuts?

Asked the squirrel staring into Barry's eyes.

I don't think so,

Replied Barry,

But why don't you move me so you can take a better look?

The squirrel grabbed Barry's arm and pulled her over.

No,

There are no nuts here,

Said the squirrel,

Pushing Barry back where she came from.

OK,

Sorry to disturb you.

I'll leave you to do whatever you are doing in the leaves.

And he turned to go.

No,

No,

Please don't go yet,

Shouted Barry quickly.

I've heard a storm is coming and I can't walk.

I wonder if you could move me somewhere a little more sheltered.

Certainly,

Said the squirrel,

I'm always happy to help.

I'll move you over amongst the big trees on the other side of the garden.

And before Barry could reply,

The squirrel grabbed her arm and dragged her to the trees.

As they went,

Barry could see the house getting further and further away.

Now how will the little girl ever find her?

There,

Said the squirrel as he laid Barry under the trees,

Will this spot be OK for you?

I think so,

Said Barry.

She felt quite comfortable lying on the leaves,

But began to feel a little chilly.

Before you go,

She said,

Could you cover me with some leaves to keep me warm,

Please?

Certainly,

Said the squirrel,

I'm always happy to help.

And he pushed some leaves onto Barry's body.

Thank you,

Said Barry.

I feel much warmer now.

Great,

Said the squirrel.

I've got to go now as I still need to find more nuts before winter sets in.

And he was gone in a flash.

Winter,

Thought Barry.

Oh dear!

My friend and I hardly went outside in the winter because of all the snow.

I hope she finds me before that comes.

Barry didn't know how long she had been lying amongst the leaves,

But many days and nights passed with no sign of the little girl.

Most of the time Barry couldn't see anything because leaves covered her,

But she could occasionally hear the little girl playing,

Although she never came close enough to find her pink,

Cuddly teddy bear.

One day Barry felt colder than she had ever felt before,

And she realised winter had arrived.

Snow replaced the leaves and Barry felt frozen.

Hey,

Said a familiar voice,

What are you doing over here?

I guess your friend still hasn't found you.

It was the hedgehog.

Oh,

Hello again,

Said Barry,

Pleased to see a familiar face.

No,

She hasn't.

A squirrel kindly pulled me here amongst the trees the night of the storm.

Oh,

I wondered how you got here,

Said the hedgehog.

Have you got a plan for the winter?

It's going to be freezing cold in a day or two.

No I haven't,

Replied Barry sadly.

I'm normally in the house with my friend when winter arrives.

It's always warm in there.

I often wondered why we didn't come into the garden when the snow came down,

And now I know.

I have never felt so cold.

Well,

It's going to get colder,

Said the hedgehog.

Why don't you do what I do,

And hibernate until it's all over?

What does hibernate mean?

Asked Barry,

Feeling a little curious about this idea.

It means I go to sleep while the cold freezing weather is here,

The hedgehog explained.

Then,

In the spring,

When the weather begins to warm up again,

I wake up.

That sounds like a good idea,

Said Barry.

I have been so worried all this time and have hardly slept a wink.

A good sleep may be just what I need.

Well make yourself comfortable because more snow is about to fall,

Said the hedgehog looking up at the sky.

I must go now and get into my cosy warm nest before I freeze.

Bye!

And he ran off.

Barry shivered and closed her eyes.

A tiny tear fell down her face as she fell asleep,

Dreaming of her friend and hoping that one day they would be reunited.

As Barry hibernated,

The snow fell and all was quiet in the garden.

Until one day something woke Barry.

Something was pecking at her face.

Opening her eyes,

She saw the robin who had been drinking from the paddling pool,

Looking down at her.

What are you doing?

Asked Barry,

Feeling annoyed.

Trying to wake you,

Replied the robin.

Well you have,

Said Barry.

What do you want?

I was surprised to see you lying out here all alone,

Said the robin.

I wanted to say hello again.

Hello,

Snapped Barry.

Now leave me alone so I can sleep.

Can't we be friends?

Asked the robin.

Deciding the robin was in no hurry to leave,

Barry asked.

Why are you so cheerful?

Because the snow has gone and spring is here,

The robin replied,

Flying slightly above Barry's head.

Can't you feel the warmth of the sun on your fur?

Barry looked around and noticed that all the snow had gone and the sun was beaming down.

Oh yes,

Said Barry,

Feeling a little happier.

That is something to be cheerful about.

Suddenly a noise came from the direction of the house and the robin flew away.

Barry couldn't see what was happening,

But she could hear the little girl's voice and it was getting louder.

Mum,

Look,

Barry's here!

Shouted the little girl,

And all of a sudden Barry was scooped up from the ground and cradled in the little girl's arms.

Oh,

That felt so good,

Just as she had dreamed it would.

The little girl ran over to the house,

Holding Barry tightly.

Oh dear,

Said the little girl's mum as she saw the teddy bear.

It looks like Barry could do with a wash.

She's been out in the garden for months and is filthy.

I don't mind,

Said the little girl,

Looking at her beloved teddy bear.

I've missed her so much and I love her whatever she looks like.

Barry was filthy.

Her soft,

Cuddly pink fur was no longer soft,

Cuddly or pink.

It was matted and covered in mud,

Bits of twigs and leaves.

It no longer looked pink,

Instead it was a dirty shade of grunge.

She really should be washed,

My dear,

Insisted the little girl's mum.

But no,

The little girl was not going to let Barry out of her sight again.

That night she went to bed with Barry wrapped in a towel to keep the dirt off the bedclothes.

After telling her teddy bear how much she had been missed,

The two friends fell into a peaceful sleep.

Later that night the little girl's mum carefully took Barry out of her daughter's bed.

She washed and dried her,

Then gently replaced her before the little girl knew she was missing.

Barry enjoyed being washed and dried.

Her fur was back to its beautiful pink colour and she felt soft and cuddly again.

Oh,

What an adventure it had been!

But Barry was glad to be back with the little girl.

She snuggled against the warm arms that cuddled her and fell asleep,

Happy knowing that tomorrow's adventure would be with her best friend.

I hope you enjoyed listening to my story.

I enjoyed reading it to you.

Before you go I'd like to ask you a question.

Do you have a teddy bear who is your best friend?
