The Kangaroo
My story is about Sylvia, a kangaroo who longed to be a mum, but it never seemed to happen. This made Sylvia very sad until the day she helped a wallaby. Listen to find out what happened. Thank you for your kind messages and continued support

Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.
I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.
So make yourself comfortable because my next story is about to begin.
The Kangaroo Sylvia loved babies,
All babies,
And she wished she could have a baby of her own.
But she couldn't.
Sylvia was a kangaroo and had longed for a baby to love and protect ever since her little sister was born a number of years ago.
She had watched as a tiny newborn kangaroo,
The size of a jelly bean,
Crawled through her mum's thick fur to the comfort and safety of her pouch.
Sylvia loved the way her tiny sister snuggled into the pouch where she was warm and safe and nourished on her mummy's milk.
Can I be a mummy?
Sylvia would ask.
When you are an adult,
Was the usual reply.
Sylvia grew up and still wasn't a mummy.
She felt sad for herself when she saw the other kangaroos with their little ones peeking out of their pouches.
She would always go up and say hello and made sure to smile,
But her heart ached with longing for her own little one.
Sylvia often hopped along the dirt tracks dreaming about being a mum and today was no different.
As she hopped between some eucalyptus trees,
She smiled to herself as she imagined what life would be like with her own baby.
The fun they would have during the day exploring and making memories,
And at night Sylvia would make up interesting stories and share how much she loved her little one.
She stopped for a moment to munch on some grass when suddenly something moved close by her nose.
Oh,
Please don't eat me,
Said a trembling voice.
Sylvia moved the blades of grass out of the way and saw a tiny kookaburra.
The kookaburra looked really scared as she looked up at Sylvia's surprised stare,
And as quick as her little legs could move,
She scurried away to hide behind a tree.
It's OK,
Said Sylvia softly,
So as not to scare the bird any more than it already was.
She carefully hopped a little closer to where the kookaburra was trying to hide.
Are you alright?
She asked.
You look very tiny to be here on the ground by yourself.
Do you need any help?
There was something soft and gentle about Sylvia which the kookaburra liked.
She no longer felt scared as she came out from behind the tree and said,
My home is up in the hollow of one of these trees.
My sister pushed me out over the edge of our nest when I was taking a peek around,
And I fell to the ground and rolled so far that I became disorientated and don't know which tree is mine.
They all look the same from down here.
Where is your mummy?
Sylvia asked,
Looking up into the trees to see if she could see another baby kookaburra peering from a nest.
She has flown off to get us some food.
We are always hungry,
You see.
At that moment,
Sylvia heard a loud noise behind her which sounded like a cackling laugh.
She turned round expecting to see another animal making the noise,
But instead it was a very angry kookaburra flying straight towards her.
Sylvia hopped back out of the way as the kookaburra landed on the ground in front of her.
What are you doing with my chick?
The kookaburra asked angrily,
Seemingly not scared at all by the size of the kangaroo.
I'm trying to help her,
Answered Sylvia,
Understanding the anger of the kookaburra as she probably thought the big kangaroo was going to eat her tiny chick for breakfast.
It's ok mum,
Said the little chick,
She really was trying to help me.
I fell out of my nest and became lost after I rolled along the ground.
The mum quickly took her chick under her wing and scooped her up as she took off back to her nest.
Thank you for helping,
She squawked to Sylvia as she flew overhead.
We will be ok now.
Sylvia watched as the birds disappeared through the branches of the trees.
If only I had my own baby to love and protect,
She thought as she continued on her way.
She hadn't gone far when she noticed a koala creeping slowly out of a big eucalyptus tree.
Hello Trudy,
Said Sylvia,
Happy to see her friend.
I haven't seen you around for a while,
How is everything?
I'm doing just fine,
Replied Trudy,
How are you?
Sylvia was about to answer when she saw a pair of fluffy ears followed by a tiny little black nose peek out of Trudy's pouch.
Oh how wonderful,
Sylvia exclaimed,
You have a baby all of your own,
I didn't realise you are a mummy now.
Yes,
Replied Trudy,
It took me by surprise too,
But I love being a mum and looking after Theo,
He is such a good contented koala,
I sometimes forget I have him as he sleeps for most of the day.
Theo looked up at Sylvia for a few seconds and then quickly disappeared back inside his mum's pouch.
Trudy glanced at her friend who suddenly appeared to have a far away look on her face.
Are you ok Sylvia?
She asked,
A little concerned that her son may have upset her.
Oh yes,
I'm fine,
Replied Sylvia,
Quickly pushing her dreams from her mind.
You looked like you were in a dream world for a moment there.
I was,
Agreed Sylvia.
I often dream about becoming a mum myself,
She sighed,
And sad little Theo got me dreaming about it again.
I'm sure your dream will come true very soon,
Said Trudy kindly,
You'll make a good mum some day,
You've always been kind and loving,
And a little Joey would be lucky to have you as its mum.
Sylvia smiled,
Thankful for Trudy's kind words,
But knowing that it probably would never happen.
The two friends chatted for a few more minutes and then said their goodbyes.
Sylvia decided to make her way home as she was tired and hungry by now.
She was about to set off when she heard the unusual cackle of the Kookaburra again.
Hey,
The Kookaburra said as she landed in front of Sylvia,
I'm glad I found you again,
I just wanted to apologise for my sharpness earlier.
Oh that's ok,
I completely understand,
Said Sylvia,
I'm sure I would have been the same if I had my own little one to care for.
I have no doubt you will be a good mum some day,
Said the Kookaburra kindly,
You seem very caring and gentle,
And my little one couldn't stop talking about you to her sister when we got back home.
This warmed Sylvia's heart,
But the thought of never being a mum still saddened her.
Anyway,
I must be going,
I'm giving my girls a flying lesson today,
So see you around,
And the Kookaburra flew off.
The next day,
Sylvia was hopping through the bush,
Daydreaming as usual,
When she heard a sobbing sound.
She followed the noise and soon saw a Wallaby sitting all alone.
The upset Wallaby was tiny and didn't look very old,
But when she saw Sylvia's kind face,
She stopped crying and wiped her tears away with her paw.
Why are you here all alone?
Asked Sylvia softly.
Because my mummy has disappeared,
Replied the Wallaby sadly.
I climbed out of her nice warm pouch to stretch my legs for a moment,
And when I turned back she was gone.
Can you help me find her please?
Of course I can,
Said Sylvia,
Thinking how much like kangaroos the Wallaby looked,
Only they were just a little smaller and looked very cute.
Sylvia put her arm around the young Wallaby.
Now don't worry,
I'm sure your mum isn't too far away.
Just as the baby Wallaby calmed down,
A noise in the nearby bush startled them.
Mum!
Exclaimed the Wallaby.
I thought I had lost you forever!
Oh Willow,
Replied her mum,
I'm sorry to have frightened you.
I was trying to help my friend and didn't think I would be gone for so long.
I'm back now,
So come and climb into my pouch.
I expect you are tired and hungry.
Sylvia watched as the baby Wallaby climbed happily into the warm pouch.
Hello,
She said,
I was trying to comfort Willow for you.
My name is Sylvia.
Thank you so much Sylvia,
My name is Wanda.
You are so lucky to be a mum,
Said Sylvia.
I've always wanted to be a mum,
But it is not to be.
I don't seem able to have my own baby.
Wanda looked up at Sylvia.
I might be able to make your wish come true,
She said.
I have a friend who is looking to have one of her babies adopted.
Come with me and I'll take you to meet her.
And she hopped off with Sylvia following close behind.
This is my friend Elsa,
Said Wanda,
Introducing Sylvia to another Wallaby.
I was helping her when Willow couldn't find me.
Wanda has had twins,
Which is quite unusual for a Wallaby.
They are both girls and not very old,
Although they are still very tiny.
She is already struggling trying to feed them both.
Would you be willing to adopt one of them?
Oh,
Please say your thing about it,
Pleaded Elsa.
You would really be helping me.
I'm so scared one or the other will not survive if I continue to care for them both.
Sylvia's heart warmed.
She could hardly believe what she was hearing.
Of course I will,
She said to Elsa.
They talked together for quite a while until Elsa became reassured that her baby would be in the safest hands possible with Sylvia.
Plus,
She wanted to make sure that Sylvia really did want to become a full-time mummy.
I will love her as if she is my own,
Said Sylvia reassuringly.
And we will visit with you as often as we can so she gets to know her real mum and her twin sister.
That settled then,
Said Wanda,
Pleased to have helped two animals solve their problems.
That evening,
Sylvia rocked her new baby to sleep.
She could never remember feeling so happy before and thought to herself how grateful she was for this opportunity to care for another creature.
She had dreamt about being a mum for as long as she could remember but had never given up on her dream.
Sometimes things don't happen the way we want them to,
She said to herself,
But they always happen the way they are meant to.
She peered into her pouch where the tiny wallaby was fast asleep.
I couldn't have a baby of my own but I got to have you as my baby.
And I love you as if you are my own.
As Sylvia settled down for the night,
She decided as her baby grew,
She would encourage her to have dreams and always believe they could be achieved,
One way or another.
Without dreams,
Life could seem very dull,
But all things are possible to those who believe,
Especially when they allow the dreams to manifest in the best way they are meant to for themselves.
Thank you for listening to my story.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Before you go,
I'd like to ask you a question.
What dreams do you have for your future?
Thanks again for listening and come back soon to hear another story from Grandma.
Bye for now.

Crikey! You finally made an Australian meditation. My plans for my future is to have 4 babies. I am Australian. I had a nice little Ozzie moment. Is that all the bush animals you got? What about a dingo or a bilby or a wild cat or a camel or a sand goanna. FUN OZZIE FACTS! Did you know baby koalas are called Joeys like baby kangaroo. Did you know joeys ( Baby koalas) eat their mums poo. Did you know kangaroos can not walk like us humans do so they can hop around and jump far and fast.
