Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.
I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.
So make yourself comfortable,
Settle back,
Because my story is about to begin.
Kelty and the Chocolate Bar One morning Kelty woke up feeling very miserable.
She didn't know why she felt like this.
She just did.
Lying in bed she felt nothing would ever make her happy again.
She didn't want to see or talk to anyone except her little dog,
Doggie.
She got out of bed and went over to her bedroom window where she peered out through the gap in the curtains.
It was raining outside and looked very cold.
Great,
Thought Kelty,
Something else to make me feel miserable.
She took an old pair of jeans out of her wardrobe and started to get dressed.
When she looked around for her favourite jumper it was nowhere to be seen which made her feel even more miserable.
Instead she grabbed an old purple jumper and pulled it over her head,
Quickly brushed her hair and went downstairs to find Doggie.
Going into the kitchen Kelty saw her mummy feeding her baby brother Louis and her daddy making breakfast.
Ignoring them all she went to the back door to find Doggie who was nearly always in the garden first thing in the morning.
Good morning sweetheart,
She heard her mummy say.
Kelty said nothing.
Good morning honey,
Said her daddy.
Would you like me to make you some breakfast?
Still Kelty said nothing.
Are you okay Kelty?
Her mummy asked gently.
No I'm not,
Replied Kelty rather crossly.
I feel miserable and I don't know why.
I'm going to take Doggie for a walk before school.
That sounds like a good idea,
Said her mummy.
And take a banana tweet on the way as you haven't had breakfast yet.
You had better put your raincoat and welly boots on.
It's not raining too hard but you need to stay dry.
Kelty went into the hallway and put her boots and raincoat on and reluctantly pulled the hood on the raincoat over her head.
Don't be too long as we need to leave for school soon,
She heard her mummy say as she grabbed the banana and ran out into the garden with Doggie.
Come on Doggie,
She said,
Let's go into the forest.
The trees may shelter us from this rain.
As they walked further into the forest Kelty was able to take the hood off her head.
The trees were doing a great job of stopping the rain from falling on her and this made her feel a little happier.
Eventually Kelty could see the big oak tree in front of her but as she got closer to it she could see there was somebody there already.
Sitting on a wooden bench up against the big oak tree was an old lady.
She had silver coloured hair tied neatly in a bun on the top of her head and was wearing a long purple dress which was covered in sparkles.
She wore small round glasses and had the most welcoming smile which made Kelty feel happy inside.
On the bench next to the old lady was a very large bag which looked as if it was made out of an old carpet.
It was covered in buttons of different colours and sizes.
Kelty walked up to the old lady and said,
Hello.
Hello my dear,
The old lady replies,
My name is Doris.
My name is Kelty and this is my best friend Duggee.
Kelty answered pointing to Duggee who was busy sniffing around Doris's feet.
Are you having a good morning my dear?
Doris asked Kelty as she bent down and stroked Duggee.
Not really,
Replied Kelty rather sadly.
I woke up this morning feeling very miserable and I don't know why.
Oh that is sad,
Said Doris.
Life should be fun,
Especially for a pretty girl like you.
Well a couple of things have already made me feel a little happier,
Kelty said.
As I walked through the forest the trees sheltered me from the rain and then I saw you and your smile made me smile too,
But I still feel a little bit miserable.
Come and sit beside me my dear,
Doris said as she patted the seat next to her.
Let me try and find a way to cheer you up.
Sitting down next to Doris Kelty was eager to find a way to stop this miserable feeling.
Now,
Doris said gently,
Close your eyes.
Feeling quite intrigued by this kind old lady,
Kelty did as she was told.
I want you to think of something that makes you feel happy,
Doris instructed.
Keep your eyes tightly shut and think of this thing until you feel so happy inside that all you want to do is smile.
Kelty tried to think of all the things that made her feel happy,
But nothing came to mind.
She just felt miserable.
Opening her eyes she said,
It's no good,
I can't think of anything.
Yes you can,
Said Doris kindly,
But you have to truly want to be happy again for this to work.
It's your choice,
I can't make you.
Puzzled Kelty looked at Doris.
It's very simple,
Doris started to explain.
You either choose to be miserable or you choose to be happy.
At the moment you are choosing to be miserable.
Kelty nodded.
Do you like feeling miserable my dear?
Not really,
Replied Kelty.
When I feel miserable it makes me not enjoy myself and I just want to go back to bed and hide under the covers all day.
So would you rather feel happy then?
Doris asked.
Yes I would,
Said Kelty as she nodded her head.
When I feel happy I have fun adventures with Duggee and I can't wait to see my friends at school.
Okay,
Said Doris,
Let's try again to find your happy feeling.
Now go ahead,
Close your eyes and think of something that makes you feel happy.
Kelty closed her eyes tightly and started to think.
All of a sudden a picture of her favourite chocolate bar came floating into her mind.
As Kelty watched the chocolate bar in her mind's eye her mouth began to water and she started to smile.
As her smile became so big she heard Doris say,
Kelty you can open your eyes now,
I think you have found your happy feeling.
Kelty opened her eyes and no longer felt miserable,
Instead she felt extremely happy.
She had a big smile on her face as she looked at Doris and saw that Doris was holding a huge bar of Kelty's favourite chocolate in her hand.
How did you know that I was thinking of my favourite chocolate?
Asked Kelty as Doris handed her the bar.
I just had a feeling replied Doris with a twinkle in her eye.
Now tell me what other things make you feel happy when you think about them.
Kelty thought about this while she unwrapped her chocolate bar and offered some to Doris.
Taking a piece Doris listened as Kelty started making her happy list.
I like playing with Duggee,
Seeing my friends,
Reading books,
Riding my bike,
Hugging my mummy and daddy,
Playing with my baby brother Louis,
I think you can stop now.
Doris interrupted her as Kelty's list sounded like it could go on forever.
You can write all these things down when you get home and add more to them.
That way you'll always know what makes you feel happy.
Kelty thought this was a very good idea.
When you choose to be happy,
Doris said,
You feel happy with many things.
But when you feel miserable,
The opposite is true and nothing seems to make you happy.
Kelty munched on her chocolate bar as she listened to Doris.
Always remember,
Doris continued,
How you are feeling is your choice and if you ever feel miserable again,
You can change that feeling immediately by doing one of the things on your happy list.
Kelty smiled up at Doris and nodded in agreement.
How are you feeling now,
My dear?
Asked Doris.
Very happy,
Replied Kelty,
And thank you for my chocolate bar.
It is delicious.
That's my pleasure.
I never know what may come in useful from my bag.
I always put something different in there every day.
Now,
Shouldn't you be getting back home?
School will be starting soon and you don't want to be late.
Kelty offered her last piece of chocolate to Doris.
No thank you,
My dear.
You enjoy it.
Kelty did just that.
As she licked her fingers clean,
She looked around for Duggee.
He had been sitting by Doris' feet all the time they had been talking,
But now he had disappeared.
She stood up and called his name as she walked behind the big oak tree to see if he was there.
Duggee,
There you are,
She said to him when she saw him playing with the stick he had found.
Come on,
We must go home now.
I have to go to school.
Let's say good-bye to Doris before we leave.
Kelty led Duggee back around the big oak tree to where they had been sitting with Doris.
To her surprise,
Nobody was there.
Even the wooden bench had disappeared,
Along with the chocolate bar wrapper.
Kelty looked around,
But all she could find was a big purple button lying on the ground where the wooden bench had been.
She picked up the purple button and,
Looking at it,
She said,
Thank you,
Doris,
For helping me understand about my feelings.
I now know how to change my feelings from sad to happy,
And that makes me very happy.
Looking down at Duggee,
She said,
Come on,
Boy,
Let's go home.
With Duggee by her side,
Kelty ran home,
Clutching the purple button which,
As well as being a new piece of treasure,
Was now also on her happy list.
The list of things which help her to smile.
I hope you enjoyed listening to my story.
